I don't know Shane. AFL's instructions to umpires are at 1:25...

They very rarely count to thirty before calling Freo to play on.

I'd like a shot clock every time a free kick is awarded. It starts when the player taking the kick is on his feet and holding the ball, counts down from 10 and automatically yells "Play on!" when the counter finishes. It would get rid of the umps thinking, "Ooh look they are deep defence in big trouble, I'll give them 3 seconds before I call play on".

Had the shot clock not been there, Mason Wood would have done exactly the same thing after being told the amount of time remaining by his runner. This ridiculous knee-jerk changes nothing.

Just wait for the reaction after someone has the ball with 50 seconds to play, elects to have a shot at goal, runs the clock down for 30 seconds then kicks sideways to a teammate - who elects to have a shot on goal and runs the clock down to zero.

They may as well just stop the clock when a player decides to have a kick at goal and start it again when they start the run up/play on/kick the ball - makes sense to me, but that's probably the problem.

They already do that. It's called 'adjudicating'. Or 'interpreting'. Or maybe just following instructions on the day?

9981, you can do that already with or without a shot clock. If you don't man up the player who receives the pass, then that's just too bad.

A 30-sec shot clock means that if an ump gives 40 secs or 25 secs instead of 30, then it's there for all to see their mistake.

Not now that the AFL have said the umpire can call play on before 30 seconds.

So, all a player needs to do is hold the ball and pretend he's ready to kick at goals. Then he can do whatever he likes. What a farce. The idea of the clock is still valid though. If a player takes too long to kick at goals, say, 40 seconds has elapsed, then you can see that he's done so and it's an umpire's mistake if he doesn't call play on.

If they don't display the clock another Sirengate may be just around the corner.

According to Nathan Buckley the new take on the clock rundown allows an umpire to decide which player can take longer than other players to kick the ball, thus allowing discrepancies at the Umps behest. Nothing new there then.
