The other day I was asked by a friend, in front of my wife of a few months, whether being married had made any difference to my life. I offered an unusually succinct (for me) answer of "nup". This seemed to rankle my wife somewhat, not because she disagreed necessarily (we've been together for ages), but that about 60 seconds earlier I had acknowledged that my life would have been about 8% better had Freo won the 2013 Premiership.
My wife's view was that if you think of all the things in your life: health, partner, family, friends, career, financial security, city you live, even other sports, etc, that 8% is actually very high.
I stand by it.
It's with that 8% hanging heavy that the last few years have been viewed. It was terrifying. You knew that if we didn't grab a cup in those years, it could be another5-10 before we are in contention again.
These days, I just feel like I'm watching a game of (bad) football. It's strangely relaxing, but I'll probably get bored of it a lot sooner than we'll be good again.
