In the NRL last night there was a double-header at Suncorp Stadium, Brisbane.
Melbourne Storm v North Queensland Cowboys followed by Manly Sea Eagles v Brisbane Broncos.
Strangely enough the Storm and Manly were the home teams.
Attendance was 52,000 - a full stadium.
Tickets sold were for both games so no having to clear people out after the first game so it was packaged as a double-header with quality teams.
Why can't the AFL do the same thing for 2 Melbourne teams versus 2 'interstate' teams?
As an example Melbourne v Fremantle could play one game at the MCG with the other being say Richmond v Port Adelaide.
Or if at Etihad where home teams tend to always make big losses unless they get at least 36,000 you could have Carlton v Fremantle and Essendon v Gold Coast.
The costs of hosting the match would then be shared by the 2 home clubs and instead of making financial loss they could actually make a small profit.
Whether it's Fremantle, Gold Coast, GWS, Freo, Port it doesn't matter but I believe this would be worth a go especially when you consider the other experiments the AFL conducts ie games in New Zealand and games in Darwin.
