Way to go getting all literal with a figurative, I'm guessing you're more a non-fiction sort Drubbing? Gap years are, at their best, ultimately about gaining perspective. Necessarily gaining perspective does involve a change of scenery of one sort or another. Sure being boozed up and horizontal in Europe is the sort of perspective we put at the top of the list of perspectives, but at some time it's still just looking at the floor in a different way (or if you're in a hostel you could be in a bunk and looking at mouldy ceilings, but hey, that's a new perspective too).

When you are 0-8 of course people are going to start taking shots at people at the club and that's fair enough, I also understand the concerns about RTB ability to implement an attacking game plan etc... But when people start going back to Harvey's sacking 4 years ago and start whinging again please ! Ross will become just another sacked coach if he doesn't deliver..... . but give him a chance he has earned at least 1 shit year .... Get over Harvey FFS

I've lost track of this topic a bit, so I'm not sure if this is the right place for it anymore, but it seems like there's been a lot of discussion about list management, so I figured I do a bit of research.

Here's my attempt to work out where our list sits in terms of age and position. It's not perfect but I think it's telling. I started out thinking we'd done a pretty good job, all things considered, with drafting and trading and list management. And I'm still pretty bullish about how we'll look in a year or two if we can get our elite players on the park. But gee, there's 2 big gaps in this table (I hope the picture works) and no surprises where they are.

I think one of our recent strengths, retention of key players, has also had an effect on our current situation of an unbalanced squad.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but have we lost anyone to another club, that we truly still needed since Roly's tenure started?

On the basis that clubs pay overs to get quality, we have perhaps been too loyal - not a criticism, as this strategy also has its benefits.

There is also where I think some of the conversation around what players we could have taken at our selections misses the mark a little - by developing enough top end talent that other clubs want, we would have been able to move up the draft. I think there's been a number of players, McCarthy included, that were drafted just ahead of our picks.

As a reminder, we got Mundy only by trading Koops.

The talk of Harvey and the past was brought up because people were incorrectly claiming RL took on an average list and worked some sort of miracle to transform it into a top 4 side when that was the expectation before he kicked Harvs out of the front seat. In 2010 we finished 6th and beat the Hawks in a final with an incredibly young side with some stars who have stuck around till 2016. It was a very talented side that was destined for top 4 in the very near future and should have won a premiership.

If you want to claim RL is some sort of messiah who worked wonders to transform us into a contender then I'd question how long your memory is or how long you've been a Freo fan.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.

I don't think that anyone is whinging about Harvey as that ship sailed long ago. He gets a mention because he was the coach at a time when we were playing really attractive football and as we were so decimated with injuries, we didn't get the chance to see how far we could have gone as his tenure was terminated so abruptly.
Why that period is re-surfacing is because quite a number of that team are still playing now under Roly and questions are being raised of the drafting and recruiting of players since that time.
I think everyone wants Roly to succeed, none of us envisaged the decline in performance that we have witnessed ,although signs were there midway through last season when we were hardly setting the world on fire with the way we were playing and we were just falling over the line in many games.
We were so consumed with our 'Great Effort' gameplan and 'Sustained Success' that we were negligent and have failed in our attempts to recruit key position players to step up when our aging stars were coming to the end of their careers.
Bond and Lloyd are rightly the ones in the firing line but Roly has to prove that he is up to the challenge of developing and restoring confidence in the players .
We have been promised 'Sustained Success' and I think that we are all feeling a little cheated and disappointed that the powers that be seemed to have been 'asleep at the wheel' as another poster eloquently put it. We don't need corporate 'covering your backside' speak, we need transparency and a bloody good plan on how we are going to get out of the mess we find ourselves in. Many of us have been in for the long haul and we deserve nothing less.

I never thought I would be reading so many fair weather supporter posts from Freo supporters.

Yep Freo are 0-8. But I think some here should take a moment to acknowledge some of the following factors contributing to that win/loss record;

Injuries: Freo have missed 211, Fyfe, Johnno, Mundy. They are massive outs. If you can't acknowledge the impact of those injuries, then I can only assume you have not been paying enough respect to the quality and impact of those players. 211 is the best ruckman in the comp. Look at the stats (team hitouts, clearances, etc... for and against when he plays for Freo) and it is without question. Also, if you're going to have a whinge about poor Harvey and the injuries he had in 2010, then be fair and mention our current injuries in 2016.

The Draw: Have a look at the current ladder. Freo have played 6 of the top 8 teams. 5 of those games have been away games. The other was vs GWS, who are currently, arguably the inform team of the comp. As posted recently, the Slime have only won 1 of their last 8 games against top 8 teams away. In the Round 3 western derby, Freo were within 5 points with about 10 minutes left in the game. That was without 211 and Mundy (and, IMO, once again against some Slime biased umpiring). What do you think the result would have been if Freo had no injuries and the Slime were missing Kennedy and Priddis?

How Bad is Freo: If you have a real good look at the results, the stats and the injuries, you would realise that the Round 2 Gold Coast game is probably Freo's worst result for the year. Freo lost that by 26 points. It appeared evident that in Freo's attempt to score more, they had sacrificed some of their defensive structures, especially in the midfield setups at stoppages. post game Roly commented on this and the stats support it, with the Gold Coast midfield scoring 6 goals from far less centre clearances versus Freo's 2 goals. Other losses in the season to the Bulldogs at Docklands, an in form and fit Norths away, Adelaide away and Hawks in Tassie were not that surprising.
If Freo had have had no significant injuries, so far in 2016, I would still not be surprised if we were now 2-6 or thereabouts given our early difficult draw. The rest of the season, the draw gets considerably easier, but wins will still be hard to come by, given current injuries and any desires for an early round 1 draft pick.

I'm not saying that Freo don't have problems with their player list or Roly and his coaches haven't made mistakes, but I am saying those problems should not be exaggerated by virtue of the current 0-8 win/loss record.

Mundy missed two games?
Even with those injuries surely nobody expected us to lose to Carlton at home. Other clubs have had injuries to some top line players and are doing better than us...........well everyone is doing better than us. It shows our lack of depth and poor recruiting that we can"t adequately cover for three injured players.

Fair weathered? Nah more like pi55ed off supporters. You might be happy sitting where we are but it's pretty obvious nearly everyone here isn't and questions are and should be rightfully asked.

The injuries we have atm aren't as great a number as those suffered in 2011 and we still managed 9 wins that year playing a bunch of kids and hobbled older blokes. Losing to Gold Coast at home this season who had a much longer and more important injury list at the time with several of their best midfielders all out was poor as was the hiding against the dogs with a near full strength squad but losing to Carlton at home regardless of any injuries was a disaster and a huge indictment on everyone running the club.

Criticising the club after an 0-8 start is hardly fairweather supporting, especially when the expectation was to challenge for a premiership again with largely the same players that won the minor premiership last season.

No CA, no other team has had the injuries and a draw as hard as Freo have in Rounds 1 to 8. If you believe that, then name them, instead of just dismissing that fact.
If you fail to appreciate the benefit that 211 and Fyfe bring to the performance of Freo then you have little understanding of why Freo have been winning so many games in recent years. I have provided many posts showing the data and the relationship between Freo’s wins and losses when 211 is playing and Freo’s midfield is dominating.

When Freo send their B-teams to play, we get thrashed.
Carlton have now won 4 from 8 games. They are not the easy beats you want to believe they are. Freo lost that game by one kick. In 2014 (R19), Freo (missing only Walters) won against Carlton by just one kick in the dying minutes. Carlton are travelling better this year than they were in 2014 and Freo are travelling worse than they were in 2014.

If you think Freo can lose top rated players and still coast in against any side, then I suggest you have unrealistic expectations of your club. To be a “pi55ed off supporter” when your team is losing and to simply dismiss the details and conditions of those losses is my idea of a fair weathered supporter.

Asking questions and pointing out areas of improvement can be done without all the finger pointing and hindsight brilliance being offered. The continual criticism, without offering better solutions is quite tiresome to read. Sacking coaching, administration and cutting players from a list, without knowing or suggesting who better can do the job, sounds to me to be the reactionary whinges of a fair weathered supporter.

In 2012, Freo had a period where they lost 5 of 6 matches. In 2012, Freo played 6 games away against top 8 teams. They lost 5 of them. The only win was in Round 22 vs NM when they were no longer combatting injuries.

I fail to understand why you would bring up the Gold Coast game when I have already conceded that was Freo’s worst 2016 performance. I also placed the blame on the coaching (for that game) which Roly took some responsibility for. Even so, what Gold Coast injuries? O’Meara and Swallow who only played half a dozen games each in 2015. Can I use Bennell and Morabito as injury excuses for Freo too?

When 211, Fyfe and Johnno (and Bennell) are out injured and you still claim expectations to challenge for a premiership, that indicates to me that your expectations are not very realistic, or at least, you wish to ignore certain details of Freo’s current predicament, to facilitate your own opinionated blame and finger pointing.

Carlton's wins have come against crab sides like Essendon and Collingwood (and apparently us) so I don't see too much relevance in them having won a few in a row, they were 0-4 when they beat us at home and are still a poor side.

You act as if we are a one or two man team but as minor premiers last season that can't be true. Especially with the mature squad and resulting depth we have, covering for injuries should not result in us being unable to beat sides competing for bottom 4 at home. We lose Sandi and have Griff come in who had people asking if we need Sandi any more a couple of years ago when replacing him. Including Bennell is a waste of time (once again) when he has never played for us and played no role in us being minor premiers last season and thus our massive drop down the ladder.

It's a bit ridiculous to think Freo can't cover a couple of top rated players like Hawthorn losing Roughead and Hodge (as important to them as Sandi and Fyfe) and more so when we were still getting belted while they were in the side. Asking questions of those in charge at the club who have given very few answers as to why we have gone so poorly is not fair weather supporting, especially when those in charge spend all their time spinning corporate babble about reviews and systems without actually coming up with solutions.

In talking about the GC loss you can probably use Bennell as a loss for them!

I have expectations of us to challenge for a single win with a few players out, not losing so comprehensively so often to average sides.
