It's the result of a recruiting policy to take athletes over footballers, this was deliberate as Roly ball requires the entire team to transition at speed from one end to the other. The issue is that despite the afl murmuring for years about wanting to create a "prettier" game and remove congestion, Roly and our football dept failed to transition quickly enough to the need to bring football players to the club, rather than cogs in the Roly machine. We seem to have taken the approach that all we had to do was rearrange some of the parts rather than build a whole new machine. Unfortunately there's a vast difference to building a defensive machine than an attacking one. The hawks have shown if you have the talent you can teach the defensive structures required to win multiple premierships, we have just discovered that a bunch of highly motivated runners whole once instilled fear amongst opposition team with our manic pressure does not make a skillful attacking side and the other teams when allowed the space are cutting us to shreds.
