TOPIC: Roly and the long Haul

Maybe I'm becoming one of those fair weather supporters - if that row in front of me keep refusing to go to the game, I'm only showing up when an easterly is blowing out of the city end. Then again, I guess I could nick one of those perspex shields the riot squad use but The Spack won't hear my commentary over the boundary every other quarter.

Injuries, confidence & the new game plan!

Nothing to do apparently with the factthat we haven't drafted the players we need to take over from our aging squad.

CA, kids get drafted every year to replenish all club with aging players. We just lucked out on the trading aspect like Hawks, Sydney and more recently Cats to contend for a flag. Because no one wants to come.

CA, no I don't believe it is "just" the injuries. I think it's "mostly" the injuries and a combination of a number of things.
Those other teams currently with few injuries are travelling well. Those other teams with injuries are not. Me blaming injuries is not something I should need to defend, especially when our injuries are to AA players and especially when those players weren't injured last year, Freo was winning.

Blaming recruiting would be very much down the bottom of my list ... winning last year, losing this year ... hard to blame recruiting.

In 2014 Freo pinched the home game off Carlton in the dying few minutes. Freo was pretty much full strength in that game. The umps looked after Murphy something stupid. Given I place a huge emphasis on Freo's need for 211 and their midfield, I would be very nervous at the start of the season if I was told we had to play Carlton without 211, Fyfe and Johnno (& Bennell).
Gone to bigfooty where there's fewer Docker Haters.

After the success of the book for 5 year olds Roly the truck did a film about his formative days and his recruitment strategy

I dont think it was always his plan, but became pretty obvious after the third round that it became the plan. Injuries aside - If your gonna lose might as well lose well. True roleys never had to rebuild before but if your gonna do it this is a strategic way of going about it - by tinkering and vetting newbies - very boss like. I think ross needs to be careful with his repumbing as he has form with setting strategic precident. Looking forward to a soft draw next year.

**(CA, kids get drafted every year to replenish all club with aging players. We just lucked out on the trading aspect like Hawks, Sydney and more recently Cats to contend for a flag. Because no one wants to come)**

Jezza, of course kids get drafted every bloody year. And stop with the luck story please.

Why is every other club in the competition sooo lucky and not us when it comes to getting people to come to their club.? If no-one wants to come here but they'll go to other clubs that are far worse than us WHY? We had a much better premiership window than other clubs that attracted players.
Bond and Lloyd are paid big money to make sure they give the coach a good and balanced list to work with. It's their bloody job to do so and get players here and they haven't done it.

Yes, we got Bennell but he was damaged goods and going nowhere else. Gumbleton-constantly injured before he got here-dud. Sylvia-dud. Anthony-dud.
D Pearce -okay, but explain to me why at 30 yrs of age we gave him a two year contract extension!? Only the very best players get more than one year at that age. Even Sandi only got 1 year.

Sivagni-average 29 always injured, Dawson-wouldn't get a game anywhere else-30, Johnson-consistently injured, near the end-31, Pavlich-talked out of retirement-34.
The gap then to the next group of talls is huge.
Tabener-struggling-23, Apeness-very average at WAFL level before injury-21, Pearce-21-Yes! Hooray, Collins-unproven-22, Ubergang-Rookie list, Smith-been on list for 5 years& back on rookie list again.

That in any man's, any team, any recruiters, or blind freddy's team is not good enough so don't ell me they've done a good job. Ex players, critics and plenty here seem to think the same so can you explain how recruiting excessive number of midfielders when we needed kpp's is doing a good job?

Back to this year - by my reckoning I've still got 7 or 8 home games I've shelled out for before September. I don't want any chevron merchandise, so I might as well keep my tickets and go and learn every other team's song - is that right?

I don't enjoy seeing our backs stressed out, having panic attacks and apologising to each other; I don't enjoy seeing Mikey get pulverised every game without an opportunity to kick a goal for his efforts; it hurts me to see Pav lumber after a ball when it comes into the forward 50 off a shanked kick; I'm finding it way more stressful watching Mayne line up for a shot at goal than I ever did with any other forward I have ever admired (even worse than Richo); and Ballantyne is probably too wise to twist-a-nipple and change the game with something crazy anymore. Worse than anything, I hate seeing our footballers running around like headless chickens and fighting to the death in congested packs all along the boundaries when I sit in the city end and just stare down this wide open highway through the middle of the ground to the old three-tier stand. I want to see Stephen go galloping down that highway, not scratching and grabbing in a pack before throwing it onto his wrong'un to nowhere. That eats at my very soul.

It fills me with dread to think that I'm going to watch my team front up for a try-out session instead of really challenging a contest that is there be won - week in, week out. Is it possible to go to every home game with only an expectation that this is a preparation for something that the someone responsible for being prepared for this season is somehow going to be responsible for? Logic says it isn't going to happen - Jeffrey isn't going to suddenly appear and lead us into a 9 game winning streak - you can't really expect to have a 10 month preseason to get into a position to challenge and carry 50000 happy supporters with you.

Even with our injuries/outs - we've got enough great talent and good solid footballers that can win games. Change your game plan - it is stupid put faith into stubbornness.

So DK, do you do footy tipping? Have you tipped against us in every game? You tipped us to lose when we were at full strength against GC? You tipped us to lose against Carlton at home?

Yes injuries have hit us, but Hawks, WB and GWS have been hit hard and it hasn't stopped them. It's all about depth in your squad and a balanced list. We don't have it.

Yeah, and this whole thing about trying out Master Youngface from Countrytown Somewhere to see how he goes under pressure in the big team is blatantly stupid. We draft, we develop, we pay, they play - that's how it works. There shouldn't be any guessing with your own players, they should be known and understood.

If you want to see what Master Youngface would do under pressure, call him into your office and sit on him - if what happens tells you something you never knew before, great.
