Chewy, I agree with your assessment of the players GWS traded away. They were all journeymen bar Treloar and Bugg.

That's part of the concern. Guys who were never going to make it at GWS have walked straight into other teams' best 22 (admittedly ordinary teams). GWS have shed them and received first round draft picks in return. This year they will have both Carlton and Collingwood's first rounders (both top 6 Shirley) as well as their own. Heaven help us if we give them ours as well.

They will have the ability to rinse and repeat this process for years to come. No more draft concessions? Pfffftt. Who needs 'em when you can manufacture your own.

Fre_Doh, just to be accurate, GWS got Geelong's First Round pick from Carlton who got it in the Lachie Henderson trade #3. That is, GWS have Collingwood's and Geelong's first round picks.

And yes, the rinse and repeat for years is going to do my head in.

They snag a premiership in the next five years then they will have even more trading currency.

Mind you it's not that unusual for newly traded in players to get gigs immediately, especially if they come into some struggling teams, can't make the trades department look silly without evidence.

I don't think there are any guarantees GWS will have a completely upwards trajectory this season or the next few either. What seems like a fait accompli today is the cause for 20/20 hindsight tomorrow, then complete footy amnesia the next time around.

GWS are still not a proven second half of a season side. At the start of the year all the talk was of how to stop GC and GWS. Well GC just collapsed after the round four getting it out of the way early, I still hold faith that GWS will suffer a similar fate.
Mumford has been talked up by the media as some kind of tough guy hard done by player who was dumped by his previous team. I remember the talk of him in the media when he went to GWS was of Sydney making a tough but wise decision to get rid of him in order to secure Buddy Franklin. He was off to GWS with his dodgy knee on an early retirement plan. He gets away with the usual kneeing, holding, rabbit punches etc because "he is a tough guy". Watching the replay from last weekend I think Griff did an excellent job on him. If the tough guy got penalised for his acts of bastardry he would be at best an average ruckman.
I cant help feeling like the AFL desperately want one of their new babies to be a success short term and GWS are now that protected species. The dream scenario for them is to have GWS, the shiny new sports car, play Hawthorn, the old muscle car going for 4 in a row, in the Grand Final. Its a revenue and promotional win win for the bent bustard's.

I agree with your thoughts on Mumford BP, and posted somewhere that I thought Griff was getting back to his best. The thing is, if Mumford is able to dish out the "tough guy" stuff and get away with it ( never worked for Solly or Cookie or any number of Freo boys, the getting away with it bit) then the confidence of his mates lifts. If he is out of the team, they are not so sure of themselves, and the top sides take advantage of every little bit of doubt.

Why? Freo hounded McCarthy and his agent, but GWS refused to pick up the phone to talk to Freo last year. How can you do a deal when the other party isn't interested in talking to you? Tell us what else Freo should have done?

If GWS do a deal with WC this year, it will be to shaft us, as they have long said they would do.

Freo dodged a bullet by GWS being pigheaded, and GWS missed out on a top 3 pick. Sucked in. The Eagles - in a two team town - would be negligent if they didn't kick the tires, and at least try to pump up the price Freo will have to pay.

It's a bugger we don't have that second round pick, because that's probably not far off his value right now. If I were the Eagles, and my pick is likely to be a late second-rounder, you'd have to seriously look at offering it.

Cam has to agree to the trade and as a Freo supporter, it would take a Yeo-made disaster for him not to be in purple next year.

But with no 2nd round pick, Freo either have to trade #1 and #3 for C.Mac and GWS's 1st round pick (or similar), or one or two tradeable players.

I can see Mayne or Barlow wearing orange next season.

Throw in the possibility of Hogan and Freo might not be able to get both.

I would probably use #1 to get Jesse over Cam, which may leave him no choice but to join the Slime.

Drubbing probably bit melodramatic, my comment was not based on last year but on what should be one of the easiest acquisitions by any club in the history of trading.
If the admin staff can't manoeuvre some sort of trade to get a second round pick to satisfy GWS, then they need to find other forms of employment. McCarthy clearly has no intentions of returning to GWS, and even if he was to return to GWS would have to serve his penance before being considered being squeezed into their forward line.
