I've said this before (as have many), mainly because I'm was, and still am, so angry that GWS were so stupid as to think that they could change a lads mindset and make him want to be somewhere doesn't want to be.
But the way our season is heading, it just makes GWS look even more idiotic.
At this rate the first round pick we offered could in fact have been well worth it - now it's turned into a win-win for us.
Gotta laugh... now

GWS need early draft picks like we need midsized utilities who can't hit targets.

I would think the image of a broken McCarthy, hanging about in the car park of a third rate WAFL club, waiting to join a winless, bottom of the ladder club was worth more to a club with a large group of players being coveted by other teams, than another top draft pick to play in their reserves side.

The strategy that set up GWS by gifting draft picks and their own nous in getting a string of young, talented players from other clubs sets them up for sustained success. Apparently, they needed this because if you've ever been to GWS-land, they couldn't give a rat's about AFL, in the same way that Gold Coast is now looking cooked without wins or any prospect of short-or long-term success. I still don't know why GWS didn't trade for McCarthy. When I looked at their line up on the weekend, I failed to see how McCarthy would have gotten a game with GWS, now, or in the future.

They could have used that pick we were willing to trade to get another player who didn't want to be there.

GWS approached McCarthy the way our Government treats refugees. It's about instrumentalities. The thinking goes that if we as a country treat refugees badly enough, it might dissuade others from coming.

Similarly, GWS decided to treat McCarthy shabbily by ignoring a potential trade to Freo in order to dissuade other clubs from raiding its AFL-gifted, GWS-developed blue-chip players.

Granted, it's a little callous to compare the persecution of a professional footballer to refugees who, in the majority of cases are fleeing for their lives, but if there was a football equivalent of Nauru, it would probably be South Fremantle.

GWS, like our Government, aren't stupid. They are just incredibly pragmatic and focussed on the long-game, or incredibly mean-spirited, depending on your view.

Ladder-leading third-rate football equivalent of Nauru, thank you.

Yes, it's exactly like that. Except the refuges don't get paid millions of dollars to kick a football around and then complain that they don't like the oval they have to do it on. Nor do they have the option of leaving and getting a job if kicking the football becomes too much of a burden.

But yeah, good analogy otherwise.

With the introduction of the AFL Bidding system and points, any draft pick of 73 or better now has currency.
Freo's 2016 1st round pick is worth plenty of points which GWS could make good use of in the 2016 draft and trade period. If we take a hypothetical that Freo ends up 14th, then that 2016 1st round pick would be worth 2034 points.

Compare that to GWS's 2015 trade#24 with Carlton. GWS gave up Lamb, Phillips, Plowman, Sumner and pick#8 for picks #28,77,95 and 2016 1st round Geelong pick. If we assume Geelong finishes 4th, then that trade equates to GWS getting about 287 points or pick#49 for those 4 players.
Gone to bigfooty where there's fewer Docker Haters.

Shane, as you've correctly pointed out it's an analogy, about the motivation of the decision maker, not the relative effects on the target. I realise, and even pointed out, that considering the relative effects on the targets would be callous.

I'm happy for you to delete the post if I haven't made that clear, or it adds nothing. But regardless of whether you think McCarthy is worthy of empathy in this situation, he's reported to be suffering from depression and an adjustment disorder that requires medication. I think it's fair to say the system hasn't been great for him.

My view is that GWS doesn't care about that as much as they care about protecting their list. For this, I think they deserve some scorn.

Booooooooooooooo GWS!

Along with the four players traded to Carlton, GWS also traded Treloar to Collingwood, Bugg to Melbourne, Townsend to Richmond and Hampton to Adelaide.

That's eight players traded out during the last trade period alone.

Some 'hands off' message they're sending.

Boooooooooooooooo!

The difference being (apart from Treloar who they were now even more compensated with Collingwoods low ladder position this year) the other 7 cant really play footy too well

GWS blow chunks, lets wait for the usual mid season collapse when Mumford kills someone with the point of his elbow and gets four weeks or some part of his body implodes ending his season. That run an gun style of theirs is not sustainable deep into a season, second half collapse immanent warning warning!
They could have used the Freo first round picks in the trade period allowing them to get some more experience into the side. I hope they get jack shite for Cam.
