Funny thing is I rate Pannell as the best ump in the AFL. Even watching the Doggies/Crows game last night I thought he was doing a good job.
Always seems a fair bit more relaxed and working with the players than most of the huffing and puffing haunted-looking umps around.
What would I know.

Mayne surprisingly got a free kick last night because from behind his opposing player had his arm around his waist.

If Pav had received a free for every time he was being waltzed from behind over his career he'd have kicked a hell of a lot more goals. The umpiring is baffling sometimes.

In general, if you are middling on the "conspiracy theorist" scale, then you could explain home town free kick from the umps. You pay good money to go to the game, and the umps get your team over the line. You feel good. You are more likely to go again next time. So the AFL has a financial interest in home town umpiring.

Which still doesn't explain why, other than at the start of last season, we don't get home town umpiring.

We have assumed our usual position on this table, and once again not one mention anywhere. At least this year it matches our ladder position a point that others will use to validate our placing, whilst conveniently forgetting previous years when similar results occurred.

When they gave a free against Pav instead of paying his mark, we got loud. We booed. But we aren't naturals like toilet supporters. We don't maintain the rage. When the umps leave the ground, they don't cop it. But they would at a toilet game. Rabid, feral abuse. That sort of thing must be in the back of the umpires minds.
