Mark my words, this trajectory that Ross is on - essentially gaming the system - will raise the ire of the afl. As the season comes to a close questions will be asked and freo hauled over the coals.

You get that when you have a socialist system of a competition that promotes poor performance in order to secure benefits. If there was relegation we would have three wins by now.

Roly opened the season by saying that loss to the bulldogs wouldn't mean the end of our season. It struck me as a very odd thing for a coach to say but there it was.

I think he could see that we were going to have problems in the transition to the new game....as it turned out, we did have problems.

In my view, I think Roly has identified deficiencies in our personnel and is seeking to fast develop those who may alleviate those deficiencies. If I'm right, then you can expect to see a decent number of delistings this year....mainly of slower, less skilled mid-fielders.

Addressing the KPPs will take a season or two longer

Your on to it Yeti, if the young chaps like Blakely, Tucker, Weller and Hughes continue to improve at the rate they are now and we retain Lachie Neale, Mundy and Fyfe will no longer need to be the midfield engine room. Fyfe to CHF, Cam to FF and Tabs third tall. Ubergang ruck resting forward with Sandi full time and away we go. Mundy to Half back flank, Collins CHB, A Pearce FB (with another 3 to 5 kg he is approaching monster size) Ibbo in the back pocket, Grey on the other half back flank and Spurr playing out of the other back pocket.
Melbourne have already said they will not pay overs for or do a "super star deal" for Hogan, so if we get him then Cam to CHF, Hogan FF and Fyfe plays in the centre. With Hill and Bennell on the wings we are again competitive, happy days. Must play the young chaps like we have been, when they were up and going on Saturday we looked really good.

Lottery Schmottery, the bottom four sides will still get high draft picks in the top ten best players available. When you are talking about those top ten or twenty players, clubs will draft what they need. If Essendon for example need a mid and draw the No1 pick in the lottery then guess what a mid becomes the No1 player picked. If Freo get the number one pick in the lottery and need a KPP forward all of the sudden he becomes the No1 pick. Not really that much different to what happens now only there is more theatre on draft night. In every draft players touted as being in the top 10 to 20 draft positions slip to lower picks because clubs take what they need, not what the "experts" see as being the best available. It's how Freo managed to get their hands on Tucker, Balic and Hughes.

Besides, we aren't tanking. We are taking advantage of a year in which we've got Buckley's* of making the finals to explore the talents of our younger players and to experiment with different set ups. Eventually we will start winning games. But in the mean time, we are quite free to keep trying to figure out a winning formula, even if it means losses along the way.
