When Lyon says that Brady's disposal needs work he's not basing it on a handful of good or bad disposals during AFL games....

I'd have a few other kids ahead of Grey in the pecking order but I don't know if he did much wrong in his two games. The question becomes then, if players need to 'earn their way in or earn their way out', what did he do in his games to get dropped? More importantly, what has Sheridan done in these games to keep him in the side?

RL's catch cry's appear to be corporate spin opposed to an actual selection policy.

Hughes disposal was fantastic last season against Port but definitely struggled on Saturiday night. No more than either of Sheridan and Sutcliffe though and he was much bigger, faster and more aggressive than the other two as well as showing plenty of guts and ability in the air. The fact he seems to find the ball and get in the correct positions to receive the footy is a very good sign. If his disposal is normally better than that or he gets it back to the Port game he will be a quality and versatile player off half back.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

I agree about Highes Bizkit. I would put it down to nerves in effectively his debut. Rd 23 last year vs Port really was nothing more than a scratch match with players having no real pressure on them.
Im sure we will see a more assured player next week and I dont expect him to get dropped again until he retires.
He will be a star for us for many years.

Agree with you Morgan about Sheridan not being a half back. He's not a good mark or strong tackler, is easily pushed out of position in a marking contest and his disposal is not that great. He was recruited as a midfielder but in typical Fremantle style we don't play him there. As was Sutcliffe I think.
He has some pace and stamina but we rarely see any run from him off half back, breaking lines and setting up play.
Grey had 10 tackles in one game.(how does that compare for tackles this year by Freo players Fre_Doh?)
If his disposal not being that good is stopping him from getting a game then how hypocritical is that considering the amount of players in our side who our just as bad.

I am not writing Sheridan off, and agree that he has up side and will be a valuable mid or winger, but based upon his current extended run of form should be dropped. Why do other young players get one or two games then get dropped without the same level of support Sheridan enjoys. How good would they be given the same opportunity?

Sorry Agarn, ten tackles is good but not exceptional.

In that rd 5 game (v Carlton): Mayne 9 tackles, Spurr 9, Grey 10, Pavlich 10, Barlow 14.

FD when you look at it from a purely stats point of view it is just a good result. When you consider you are comparing him to 150 plus gamers and a legend of the club, when Grey is only playing his second game, thats exceptional and puts him in some pretty good company.

bpurple, I was replying directly to Agarn's question, not commenting on the merit of Grey's performance.

I would say that 'Tackles' is a stat which I don't pay a lot of notice to.

A brilliant tackle (at the right moment) is one of our game's great highlights.

A mountain of tackles is usually a sign of:
i. one team being second to the ball all day.
ii. a wet day with lots of scrimmages and stoppages.
iii. two teams with poor disposal skills, missing their targets, resulting in lots of scrimmages and stoppages.

The top 5 tackling teams this season are: Port 557, Hawthorn 539, Collingwood 524, Sydney 518 and Freo 508.

Port are having an up and down season, Hawthorn are 5-2 and could easily be 2-5, Collingwood are rubbish, Sydney like lots of stoppages (and have played a couple of wet weather games) and well you know how we're travelling.

At the foot of the tackles table are: GWS 439 and Western B's 428.

Two very fast teams who use the ball well and hit their targets more often than not.

Tackling is a basic and very important skill. Keeping track of tackle counts not so much. Use the ball better and you won't need to fight for it on the ground.

Grey's performances have been very meritorious. Looks a real goer and hard as a cat's head.
