No. 3 pick in 2008 draft. Other then Mora, high draft picks have been scarce since then because, dare I say it, we've been successful without winning a premiership. Now compare that to GWS, a plethora of top 10 draft picks, since their inception, 5 years ago. We're on a hiding to nothing. The fact that our recruiters have uncovered a Brownlow Medallist, a replacement for AA Luke ( A. Pearce)and Lachie Neale, is a credit to them. The leg up GWS have been given should not be underestimated.

This is the group that, since 2010, in the first round, gave us Pitt (his medical condition is a fortunate excuse because before that he showed nothing), Simpson (yes, classy but recruiting is about looking at the entire package), Sheridan & Crozier (trade bait?) and Apeness (I still hope the potential gets on the field).

Can we seriously blame the recruiting staff for injuries and a medical condition no one, not even the player new about. The dodgy ticker was probably a major factor in limiting on field performance and the ability to run out games. Our recruitment relies on known variables and data relating to potential a recruit, perhaps they should study alchemy and hire some psychics to see what the future holds.

My understanding is, that Pitt struggled to raise his fitness/endurance from that seen in the junior levels to that which is required to compete at AFL level. Raises the question as whether recruiting staff should be doing formal cardiac testing (eg stress echocardiography) as part of the "due diligence" or whether you write this stuff off as bad luck. It is however not clear whether his cardiomyopathy was present at the time he was recruited or whether it developed whilst he was on the Docker's list.
