demo1, the rules relating to the 'weighted draw' are pretty clear.

If we finish bottom 6... Bottom six: Clubs ranked 13-18 on the ladder will have either no return meeting or a maximum of one return meeting with clubs ranked 1-6. They will have a minimum of one or a maximum of two return meetings with clubs ranked 7-12. They will have a minimum of two and a maximum of three return meetings with other bottom six clubs.

The final finishing position of the Slime comes into play here.

If they finish top 6, we will have: no other games v clubs 1-6; min 1, max 2 games v clubs 7-12; and min 2, max 3 games v clubs 13-18.

If they finish middle 6, we will have: min 0, max 1 game v clubs 1-6; min 0, max 1 game v clubs 7-12; and min 2, max 3 games v clubs 13-18.

Well, unlike everyone else I'm worried that we won't spend enough time at the bottom of the table. I didn't think we spent enough time at the bottom last time. As someone noted here a couple of threads ago, we have had two top ten picks in the last eight years compared to GWS getting about fifty. You don't need to be a string theorist to figure what that means. GWS look to me to have about about fifteen players who would walk straight into our best 22. (I think we'd get more out of them than GWS does.) It's close to a freakin' miracle that we can compete with them at all.

If you want to apportion blame for our current situation a good chunk goes to our success, success based to a large extent on, much as I love them, a bunch of second rung players.

The AFL runs a limited socialism system with the draft order and the salary cap. In theory this should even things up but in practice there are strong clubs who spend more time at the top end. We have a bunch of people working towards making a great AFL club - something more than winning a premiership - but it's going to take time.

Right now, we just need to get a few more quality players in the team. We're on track.

I might, however, be wrong about this. It could be that I misunderstand the situation and all we need are more hissy fits and bitching. If so, could someone explain it to me because I don't get how this is going to work at all.

Please stop referring to our current crop of older experienced players as second rung, second rate etc etc. They are the players who have taken this team from being a joke to sustained finals appearances including a GF. The fact they have done this in my book makes them very good first rate players. We are now starting to lose those players and I think it is a reflection of the win at all cost, where's my GF trophy, mentality that some supporters have that suggests they were never good enough.
They are what we had and they have given a fair chunk of their loyalty, blood and sweat for this club. The new guys are coming through and now they are in the firing line and already being branded second rate by a bunch of armchair experts and critics. Give them a break show them the respect they deserve.

BP I'd say they are been great players despite say not having the ability to kick goals reliably from 50 metres. That was the difference between us and GWS the other night. We are a team who got there by hard work. No disrespect, in fact the reverse.

Ross' plan is genius. Having read the lay of the land for 2016, he's focused on getting games into youngsters, this years number 1 draft pick (to trade for Jessie Hogan), and a dead easy draw for 2017.

We're just tanking 15-16 games out. Sandi knows. That's why he resigned for 2017.

This discussion keeps returning to GWS - which is fair enough, but we're skirting some very important issues:
a) their ability to spot WA talent; and
b) their ability to develop that talent into first team footballers - despite being situated in one of the worst spots to live/work in this country (arguably).

I was surprised to see the monster that Rory Lobb has developed into - over 100 kgs and standing at 206cm. He was picked in the second round (#29) in the 2013 draft - that's 2 seasons ago (most of which was spent in the NEAFL and a big stint out with a crook knee). A spindly kid with a basketball background - developed into Mummymeister's stand-in and a fairly imposing forward threat. It's impressive what GWS have turned this kid into - it's also a damning indictment on our club's ability to recruit/develop.

We've got great players, we've got good players too - we should have a squad that takes it right up to the best. In that we don't is something everyone shouldn't shy away from - something is wrong, somewhere.
