TOPIC: GWS Combo Deal

My point is that what a player is worth and market value is different. Bond seems to cop it for paying more than he should have for Bennell because it's more than the 'market' would have paid, but also cops it for not paying for what Mitch Clark was worth, which allowed Melbourne to swoop.

I'm just trying to figure out which metric Bond should use; fair price or market price. Because sometimes they are different.

Some people seem to think Bond sucks for not turning the screws enough, and others for turning them so hard people walk away. All comfortably feel they can say Bond sucks.

My view is that his job is hard, and every schmo is an expert from outside the room.

It's not a single overall policy as I'm sure you have argued yourself in defence of Bond, it's a situational decision that changes based on circumstance. It's near on impossible to argue Bond got the Clark call right but Harley is very different.

I'm as stoked as anyone to have Harley at the club but I do think we could and should have gotten him for less. Bond didn't stuff up the deal and getting Harley is a win regardless of what we paid for him because he has the potential to be the best player in the AFL and is probably a top 10 mid in the comp when fit but we still could have done much better than we did at the trade table.

That second round future pick seems unnecessary.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

'My view is that his job is hard'.....it must be, we are last on the ladder. Perhaps too hard for him?

There's plenty of time for this wheel to turn yet. Sure he's had some very good games in this stretch of six (mostly when GWS has kicked 20+ goals), but I'd be betting Lobb will have more quiet games than good ones before his contract is up. He's probably not much of a chance to provide any great answers to our short term issues with KPP's. This would play to Bond's strong suite, playing the loooong game and rely on chance for the chips to fall into his lap. It's pretty rare for youngsters to get out at the second or third contract, unless they're at Brisbane. GWS has everything stacked in their favour and unlike us, have an abundance in all areas.

On the bright side, we are probably seen as a much more harmless destination for trades now.

Using the AFL bidding system points to put some value to the trades;
Harley trade#4;
Gold Coast received Freo's Round 1 + Round 2 selections = #16 (1,067 points) + #35 (522 points) = 1579 points.
In return, Freo got Harley Bennell and Gold Coast's Round 2 pick = #22 (845 points)
That equals, 1579 - 845 = 734 points, equivalent to a 25 or 26 pick.
So Freo got Harley Bennell, the #2 2010 draft pick, with some baggage for the equivalent of a 25 or 26 pick.

Trade#37;
After that trade was completed, a little over a week later Freo traded (again with Gold Coast) their Round 3 pick, #56 (194 points) + their future 2016 Round 2 pick (value unknown) for pick #35 (522 points) and #61 (135 points). Freo then used those two picks to draft Balic and Yarran. (522+135-194=463). 463 points is about equal to pick#38.
So it could now be fair to say (in hindsight), Freo paid a premium in 2015 when trading their future Round 2 pick (given Freo's current poor performance and likely 20 something Round 2 pick in 2016), considering GC paid about 463points (pick#38) for it.

It would also be fair to criticise the recruiting considering all of those three recruited via the Gold Coast trades have resulted in injured players yet to play an AFL game.

Personally, I'm still optimistic that all three of those players will be good contributors for Freo in the future. If so, then it was successful trading. If not, then poor trading. With more time and hindsight, it'll be easier to applaud/criticise.

As for Clarke, if/when he comes back into the side, he would be best played on a wing and not ruck or forward. It would simply things for him and decrease the km's for the rucks. Utilise his mobility and free up his marking power, which he showed early on.
