Morgan - that would be the same menswear store where one guy stands in front of the shopwindow for 2 weeks staring hopefully at a particular suit, occasionally going in and speaking to the sales staff, but always leaving empty handed, and without going to another store on the street? This despite the fact that the suit has been tailored to fit him and won't fit anyone else? Meanwhile, several other customers walk in, grab a suit or two off the rack, and walk out again?

I think Shane's assumptions would be justified - if that was the store you were talking about, of course.

Of course, my point was that they don't buy cheap suits. They don't do anything cheaply. Fremantle run a downright opulent football department.

For some reason, though, they think footballers should only be bought if you can ger them cheaply.

Wouldn't have thought our offers to GWS and Gold Coast were cheap given that Bennell was essentially told that he was gone. I was personally worried that our offer for McCarthy was over the top and looking at our ladder position this year could be proven correct.
When i stated that we had an opportunity to get below market value was in relation to this particular deal, because of GWS's unwillingness last year. Essentially clubs are looking to free agency to secure players without sacrificing draft picks.

Maybe the issue is not what we are offering at the table but how we are identifying our targets. The Eagles for example haven't targeted massive names but lower profile good talent, eg Redden and Yeo. The difference, is their high draft picks are at the other end of the age scale to ours. They are in a position of trying to supplement their top end talent whilst we need to replace some of ours.

Freo offered pick 22 and our first round draft pick this year for McCarthy. That's was an ok offer at the time.

But GWS was stubborn and missed a chance to get a top 5 pick for a guy who may never play football again. I bet that with the benefit of hindsight, and assuming they know best, the posters on Giantland are fuming over that one. All 5 of them.

You're ignoring the fact that they had him under contract and that a deal will still have to be done at the end of this year if we want him.

But it's also not just about McCarthy. Fremantle always baulk at the cost.

DBTS, When other teams are performing well and Freo poorly, we have a tendency to think the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence. From what I have found, Freo have recruited quite well and possibly better than the Slime in recent years (& remember, during this time, the Slime have generally had better picks than us). I posted this about a week ago;

Freo's and the Slime's recruiting record since the 2011 draft (picked that date as that's when Roly came on board with Freo). Freo have had 24 players play at least 1 game out of those recruited since the 2011 draft. The Slime have had 19. The total number of games for Freo's 24 players is 578 matches, for the Slime 474.

DK - the number of games played by the draftees is not a particularly good measure of the success of the drafting/trading. If you draft and trade poorly, and as result have an ordinary list with little depth, average players are going to get a lot of games.

I look at that list and would argue that the Slime are ahead there on talent and future potential, regardless of the fact that guys like Sheridan and Sutcliffe have played lots of games for us. And I hate saying that.

And as for grass is greener when we are struggling - nonsense - the same people are saying the same things they have been saying for 4 seasons - even whilst we were minor premiers - and are now being proved right. Lose a gun half back and ageing ruckman, and suddenly we have an ordinary list? Who could have seen that coming? Only blind Freddy and half the posters on DL.
