The only change I want is 3 points for a rushed behind. That is, when a defender under pressure decides that the easy option is to give away a point. That you got them under such pressure that they had to do that is worth 3 points.

In a past rule of Aust Rules Football, the points were only brought in to separate teams that had the same number of goals. For example, Team A scores 10 goals 0 behinds; Team B scores 9 goals, 20 behinds. Team A still won because it kicked the most number of goals. Hence, with the new AFL rule change concerning the GF replay, I always thought it was a good idea that instead of playing extra time (as a first option), go to the goal difference to decide the winner. This would resolve many draws - in the first instance - including the GF. In the instance of both teams kicking exactly the same score (e.g., Team A, B both score 10 goals, 1 behind), go to the golden goal scenario, not the winner of extra time. You can't say it's not in the tradition of the game, because the point system was only ever brought in to separate teams that kicked the same number of goals.

The 5 point goal, if it is a legitimate suggestion, in absolutely ludicrous and seems like a rule change for the sake of a rule change.

RR the only problem with that is it is another arbitrary decision and I can see Freo conceding a lot of forced behinds (3 points) but not being the beneficiary of very many forced behinds, much like the 10 mt protected zone, illegal disposal of the ball in the tackle, deliberate out of bounds, and sufficient or insufficient force or deliberate choice to bump instead of tackle interpretations are applied at the present time.

Can you find me a rule change that isn't for the sake of a rule change?

Drubbing, a few years ago in the preseason, the AFL trialled a boundary throw in about 5-10 metres in from the boundary, to try and get the ball and players away from the boundary. This rule was brought in to try and fix the congestion and stop-start boundary throw ins style of play. It was highly effective, bringing the ball into the corridor more often. I thought that this might be one that they would actually enact in the regular season.

The one thing you get from reading a history of Aussie Rules is that the game is constantly evolving, and the rule changes are a sign of that evolution. Some are good (I think that the rule penalising sliding into another player is good), and some are head scratchers. I think that the key to changing the rules is to make sure the head scratchers don't get enacted because the idea that rules should stay constant and never change is as dopey as constantly changing the rules for inconsequential reasons.

Makes you wonder if someone in the AFL is struggling with their 6 times tables?
