For years people have been warning about the increasing likelyhood of structural deficiencies that will cause the entire thing to collapse. The people in charge have talked about fixing it up, they've come up with plans to sort out the problem but things were running smoothly so they've never acted on them.

And then they had to close the Fremantle Traffic Bridge and no one was going anywhere fast.

I'm sure there's a lesson in that somewhere.

You don't want to go back to the pre 2012 days when there would be the odd closure on the bridge for maintenance.

We looked like idiots then, laughing stock to the people down the road, best to do nothing.

The problem, as I see it, is that the foundations are old and, increasingly, prone to breaking down. Key structural members are all long past their best. Some have already faded away. To rebuild on such old foundations would be foolish. The answer is clear - a shiny new bridge has to be built, to replace the creaky old one, in a new location. Cockburn looks promising...
