Lindsay Thomas (Kangaroos), an eminently unlikeable player in my opinion, takes out Lachie Hunter with a 'coat hanger' tackle. Hunter is taken to hospital and the MRP regards that as 'medium impact' and careless. Thomas is offered a one week ban for an early plea.

This highlights for me that the AFL has lost the big picture regarding penalties and suspensions. I think there should be judgment of whether a player is acting 'in the spirit of the game' or against the spirit of the game. Vision of the Thomas incident suggests the latter and that alone should attract a more severe assessment.

Putting aside his tripping penalty, I think that the majority of Nat Fyfe's penalties in 2013 and 2014 were for incidents in which he was going for the ball, rather than an opponent. Sam Mitchell's knee to Fyfe in 2015 was certainly not in the spirit of the game and he got off lightly with a warning, given that he was a serial offender.

Settle down. You can't throw a coat-hanger below your waist.

It was a very light high tackle that was made worse because Hunter was looking to draw high contact and got some. No one to blame but himself. If he'd put his head over the ball he would have been fine.

If I were in charge, Hunter would have been give three weeks suspension and substandard medical treatment for being a diving nancy.

And I find Lindsay Thomas very likeable.

The AFL has tried to dissuade players from bumping when they can tackle. LT tried to tackle but was clumsy and the bloke ducked.

Are you suggesting they should also ban the tackle?

Ducked? You know, one of the things about picking up the ball is that you have to bend down to do it. As he was coming up after picking it up he copped a swinging forearm. The MRP were very kind in calling this "careless".

You're right, ducked is the wrong word. He led with his head. It's a great way to win a free. It's also a great way to get hit in the head.

LT should have tackled more carefully and copped a week for it. All of that seems right to me.

Maybe I'm reading this wrong, but he was leading with his head because he was picking up the ball. This is exactly the situation in which the AFL wants to protect players. I don't think he did the, "I'll deliberately keep my head down to draw a free kick" thing. His head was low only because he was picking up the ball.

I thought there was an incident on the weekend where Michael Walters was bumped front on by an Adelaide player while his head was over the ball.

He got up, just a bit shaken and took the free kick, but I was under the impression that kind of incident, even when its low impact warranted a mandatory suspension of some kind.

The AFL is trying to stamp out going the bump on the guy with his head over the ball, not the tackle.

When I was a nipper, I was told to keep my head over the ball, and protect myself by turning sideways. I don't know what the Bulldogs player was intending, but he led with his chin, and copped a hit.

LT got two weeks for a crude tackle, down to one for an early plea and because of his record. How many weeks to you reckon a bloke should get for s clumsy tackle? 3? 4?
