TOPIC: Ballas?

Nup - any team, especially a team in the deep/dank basement, can afford to leave out a game changer. Ballantyne has that ability - if he declares himself fit he stays out there.

Besides, Steve can't realistically say to me 'Hey, Polly - don't squander your seat for a pile of crappy merchandise worth a third of what you paid for your seat this weekend, we've got heaps of greenhorns that will be sea-gulling around the footy this weekend looking to acclimatise to the big game'. As if that's going to convince me to trudge out for another loss at home on Saturday...

When Hayden isn't playing the pigeon will return to chomp on some chunder in the city end. It's depressing to watch, especially when it's our forward 50 and there isn't a player within cooee of the little bugger.

I love Ballas as much as the rest of the crew however what troubles me is that nearly 3 years on from our GF loss, Ballas and Mayney for that matter are still making the same mistakes that they made on that day. Ballas still can't stand up and we suffer on the turnover when he continues to slip over and Mayney is still missing shots from 30 metres directly in front. Chris was amongst our top disposal winners but when it comes to continually missing these easy shots at goal I'd rather be seeing the likes of Yarran, Ubergang, Apeness or Tanner Smith given the chance to show their potential. I loved the way Taberner potted his goal from the boundary and maybe he could assist Mayney with his goalkicking yips.

clearly he's carrying some sort of leg injury. The way he pulled up trying to change direction in Adelaide clearly proves it. If he needs surgery, may as well send him in now and get it done and rest him as long as needed.

Yarran, Ubergang, Apeness and Tanner Smith all have the opportunity to show their potential ... in the WAFL. If they are unable to display it there, I struggle with how it would be any different at AFL level.

Once they are consistent producers in the WAFL and Ballas and/or Mayne are still out of form, then they should get an opportunity.

If Ballas told me he was good to go, I'd be inclined to pick him every time. But sometimes players need to be protected from themselves.

However it is we've tried to manage Ballas these last couple of seasons, it hasn't worked. These last few years should have been Ballas' prime, but he hasn't fired. He clearly has the desire and skill, so you'd have to wonder whether something is letting him down physically.

My point DK is that after the 2013 GF, the player group declared that their aim was to improve in order to counter Hawthorn and the other top teams and whilst some like Fyfe and Neale have risen to greater heights others such as Ballantyne, Mayne and Danyle Pearce have gone backwards and are making the same mistakes and turnovers which as we've seen this year have cost us the games against Carlton, North Melbourne and Adelaide. Whilst the opposition of North and Adelaide was high quality the same can not be said of Carlton and we cannot trot out the same old excuses for such a loss on home soil against a Wooden Spoon contender.
I'm not saying delist or trade these loyal servants but they need to be accountable just as less high profile players such as de Boer, Mzungu, Ibbotson and Clancee Pearce.

To give young players an opportunity without them earning their strips destroys credibility. Playing in the WAFL and getting 30 touches is like getting 0-5 touches in the AFL. Whilst I'm an advocate of getting games into our kids, let's not setting them up to fail. We seem to forget that players like De Boer, Ibbo, Suban have played 100+ games of AFL and if they are performing great in the WAFL, why would you not play them. It's ok to play the kids, but don't crucify them.

Totally agree with you Gumnut.

We just often seem to be dropping seniors to the Magoos where they perform far better than the players we are bringing up. It doesn't concern me so much now in 2016 when the season has already had a line put through it, but it would be nice to have young players going so well that they got promoted out of reward more so than due to the failings of the senior players.

I think that for the rest of this season, and possibly next, the role of senior players in the WAFL is to play alongside the young guns, and help their development.
