Your probably right morgan. God knows how many times I have meticulously pointed out to eagles fans the endless supply of benefits they were given when they joined the competition. In fact, the vics were so upset with the monster they had created that we got absolutely nothing.

But that's all history now anyway. I would be happy with an average of 8th over twenty seasons if we bobbed up for a flag every now and then.

Right peoples, again I'm getting on my soap box and screaming ITS THE MIDFIELD.
Here's some more stats for you.
Since Round 1 2015 until now (2016 R6, 30 games, I haven't had the time to go deeper), when the total sum disposals of the following midfielders; Fyfe, Mundy, Barlow, Neale, Hill & D.Pearce are tallied up for each game ...
Freo have won 14 out of 14 games when their tally is 145 disposals or more.
Freo have lost 10 out of 11 games when their tally is 130 disposals or less.
(for 130-144 disposals, it's 3 wins and 2 losses)

Also, in all 5 games 211 was missing, Freo lost and those midfielders never had a combined sum of more than 143 disposals.

Davo, if you didn't know the final score, but looked at the rest of the stats for that game, you would think Adelaide would have won that game anyways. That is, the Crows won the Contested Posessions (& easily won the Uncontested Posessions), won the Hit Outs, had equal inside50s and had more scoring shots.

Having said that, it was one of the better performances by Freo's midfield given they were without Fyfe.

But, if your midfield is dominating a game, you are more likely to have a better goal to inside 50 conversion and much better goal kicking accuracy. For example, out of those 14 games won where those 6 midfielders tallied 145 disposals or more, Freo only once kicked more points than goals ... 2015 R17 Carlton 13.17 vs 8.5. Conversely in those games where Freo's midfield performed poorly (less than 130 disposals) Freo kicked less goals than points in 6 of those 11 games ... So NO, it directly relates to the midfield.

Kicking behinds relates to midfield underperformance.

Wow, in over 40 years of watching footy, I never knew that. I always thought it was players dropping the ball crooked. Thanks for the insight.

I now know the reason behind Levi Casboult's inaccuracy. It has nothing to do with his kicking style, it is his shitty midfield.

Same goes for Mayne and Pavlich at the moment, and why Kennedy scored 3.6 in a 62 point win.

When the midfield is dominating, its just common sense that the ball will be delivered with less pressure to the forwards in better goal kicking positions, subsequently, a better goal conversion rate.

It's very easy to be dismissive. It often saves time and effort to educate yourself.

When it comes to the best way forward, I've got as much clue as the average Mark Duffield.

Whatever happens, he'll need to find some young players who can take a step up, which they many now get a chance to do. Freo management also has to get its head out of its bum and trade aggressively this year. They might not have heaps of currency to work with, but they have to try. If they had to let Weller or Neale go to get a top quality forward with a few years in them, it probably wouldn't be the dumbest move in the world. It's not like there's a shortage of midfielders and they know they can get those...
