Yeti, Gumby wasn't a free agent.

We traded a pick (#55) to get him.

Hawthorn used #56 to select James Sicily.

It remains to be seen if Lyon is the man for a rebuild but we are about to find out. At the least, the players play for him which is half of it. I can't recall a Freo team in the last five years not trying their ass off in a game.

As to Morgan's original post, it is hard to assess the administration because we were coming from such a low base. The first 10-15 years were awful. But I do wonder if really there could have been any number of officials that would have got us to where we are at today- moderately successful and fairly well supported. But there is no excuse for us to not be successful or well supported- it is a two team town after all. I have also become uncomfortable with Peter Bell being on the board. Listening to him analyze after games on 6pr is little more than him being the voice of The administration to the masses. The last thing a club needs is a cozy circle of nepotism developing.

I am inclined to back the current admin and coach. But I am very disappointed. It is almost inexcusable how poor we have been in an equalised competition. We came close, sure, but I think we all knew we were never really that good. I probably enjoy Morgan's posts the most on this site because he is the voice of reason and logic, whereas I (and others) let emotions get the best of me with footy. But the question I would most like to ask Morgan or others is this- How come we seem to get it so wrong, while west coast seem to get it so right? This is a genuine question. Some clubs seem to understand what is needed to stay at the top, or near the top, for extended periods and I struggle to understand why Freo seem to find it so hard.

The great irony of it all is that Harvey was a rebuilder and we traded him in for Lyon to finish the job and now it appears after all that has gone on, we now need a rebuild.

No this isn't jumping off he ross band wagon btw. I just think it's kinda funny and The sort of irony that is Fremantle in so many ways.

LOL Guy, I hear you. I personally can't wait to get Mrs Blue a brand new Fremantle Dockers purple wooden spoon for Christmas. That ought to cheer her up and improve discipline amongst the little Blues running about as she hands out some brand management. The new scarves complete with hangman's noose already for those of us fronting up for the next days work after the next derby will be a hit also......

I headed south over the weekend and took the traditional route out of town, North Lake Road, Armadale Road and what some like to call a freeway, so I got a good look at the ETAF on the way.

That's moving forward. Expect some exclusive memberships to that coming online soon as well.

Good question, Goodie. How do WC get it right: Premierships help. The perception that you are joining a successful outfit will usually lead to you choosing the other mob. Think of your own workplace compared to one you might be thinking of joining. You walk into the Eagles rooms and there's the glitter of silverware. You walk down the Docker corridors and see bugger all. The choice between us and them is pretty striking.
I just hope we hold up our membership through our dip years. Can you imagine going to a home derby at the 60,000-seat new stadium and being outnumbered by Eagles supporters?

We should look closely at those Eagles. They just get everything so right. Everyone admires them. Perhaps if we can learn from them then we might one day be a proper football team like them. The Eagles would never end up in the terrible pickle we're in.

Yeah, Guy,

I'm thinking with such a poor start to the season, coupled with dwindling crowds, we might need a new jumper or team song to boost the sales.

I'm sure we have top men working on this.

Top men!

Goodie, flattery will get you everywhere. Welcome to a very exclusive club of people who enjoy my posts. Currently it's just me and you, but I'm playing the long game.

On the Eagles, I actually think their success is a bit of a misnomer. I just did some sums (not my forte), and in the years since Freo entered the competition, they have won one flag (snuck over the line by a point) and have an average finishing position of 8th, most of which was in a 16 team comp. Perhaps those with greater numeracy acumen, like Fre-Doh or DK can verify that. If I'm right, you'd be hard-pressed to find a more statistically average club in the competition.

They were gifted a State of Origin team in the 90's which inflates their sense of success, and even their fluky 2006 win was on the back of a Brownlow Medallist from Fremantle being gifted to them under the Father/Son rule. Also, you know, they were probably on the gear.

I think aiming to emulate the Eagles would be accepting mediocrity.

There are only two types of coaches - sacked and not-yet-sacked. The only coaches in the latter are there due to sustained success.

Think Sir Alex Ferguson, Wayne Bennett, Alastair Clarkson. They stay or leave in their terms.

Malthouse coached a record number of games but was way past his use by date by the time Carlton finally got rid of him.

The New York Giants won 2 Superbowls under Tom Coughlan who was their coach for 16 seasons. But after missing the playoffs for the third straight season in 2016, he was gone.

Lyon has an excellent H&A record and makes the finals virtually every season. If Freo finish near the bottom next year, then start calling for his head but until then, he's got his chance to turn it around.

I'm naturally reticent when it comes to leaping with gay abandon onto the bandwagon of someone else's success, but I'm on board with liking your points as well, Morgan. As for your summary of the Ooftits' remarkable run of success, all I can say is that they are, indeed, the Yardstick of Mediocrity.
