TOPIC: Recruiting Policy

We have a policy of not taking Vic and SA metro kids. If you look at what we have taken from these states its always the country boys. The idea being a kid who grew up 300 kms on a farm outside of Melbourne is not going to have his homesickness cured by returning to Collingwood.*

I reckon we are the only team doing that, is it time for a rethink? Increased retention rates v's bigger talent pool.

* I think over explained that bit!

I think we should take the best available player.

If we had this current model in place 15 years ago we would not have taken Pav.

I think about 30% of AFL players would come out of Melb and Adelaide. So we have placed our selves at a massive disadvantage even before starting.

Basing the recruiting from Melbourne is dumb to start with. There are more clubs with much better networks operating out of Melbourne. They are going to beat us there every time.

So not only are we, at best, runing the 11th best operation from Melbourne, we've given up our tactical advantage in WA that has seen us pick up a lot of good, overlooked local talent in the past.

We're chumps. Giving the Eagles a free run at WA while we fight for Victorian scraps with the Northern clubs.

Are we though? We took two of them in the last draft.

We certainly don't seem to put much effort into identifying and securing tall players born in our own backyard.

Just fleshing out what has already been said. The recruiting policy of drafting midfielders and trading for kpp players is not working. I agree with the theory that Rolls Royce kpp have a genetic advantage and are top 10 draft picks like Hogan, Cameron, Boyd etc. There also seems to be plenty of WA boys that have made it as kpp but were not high draft picks like Hooker, the McGovern brothers, Darling etc. Could freo use a scatter gun approach? How many kpp could you have on your list? Is 15 too many? That leaves room for 4 ruckmen and the rest mid-sized midfielders and flankers. If 1 in 3 make it then right there are 5 kpp. Really think there is an opportunity there. Get Phil Smart on board just to look at WA talent only and keep the incumbents to look elsewhere.

If Smart was so good, I'd like some detail about why.

Well on that theory we should have taken Rory lobb over Micheal appness. Foward line may be looking a bit better with the wa boy they reckon will break the all time contested marks record up there.

A bit rough Laz comparing Lobb to Apeness when the big Ape has had a knee recon and Lobb hasn't. If they had both had the opportunity to develop at the same rate who's to say that Apps would not have become the same or a better player. The mistakes of the past can't be repeated and we will be forced to pick and trade for talls this year.
