This makes for a sobering read, especially if you are RoLy.

Lets face it. We are easy targets all year for this type of article written by eastern state reporters. It fills content space, the club won't fight back and you haven't upset your target market.
If and when we play the kids and they don't stand up to the rigours of AFL footy that will be the next story. Strap yourselves in peeps it's going to be a long year.

I can handle a long year. It's the prospect of a long five years that has me worried.

Earlier in the week Inside 50 posited the theory that for all his pragmatic butchery of football’s aesthetic, there is still something endearing and even likeable about an oddball like Ross Lyon, but then a few unfortunate souls who’ve been on the end of his press conference barbs vehemently disagreed, pointing out that the coach is unnecessarily difficult to deal with and often just downright spiteful and rude. Though of no consequence to the average fan like us, you’d suppose that this is indeed a concern if you’re part of the 0.00001% of the population who personally interact with this fascinating, flawed man on a regular basis.

This journo obviously didn't read some of the comments his mates in the media made when ROLY decided to take up a coaching contract with Freo. Downright spiteful and rude is only scratching the surface of what he had to wear, and to cry foul when the serve is returned smacks of sooky la la attitude. If the media treats Lyon with respect I am sure that respect will be returned. As it is with some of the media.

What a load of CARP. We're easy targets and Roly has been in the crosshairs since he came over to Freo. They were all lining up to one day pull the trigger. I say, if Freo are not contending again next year, then I've underestimated Lyon's coaching prowess.

Hey Russ, would give more credit to these views on how Ross Lyon is with people, if you had written the article 6 months ago. Love the line we were going to rank them 10- 12. What a twit.
That's not to say that it might transpire. Without attracting talent it is a 5 year rebuild minimum.

Who sub-edits this garbage? Cale Hooker is a "polite man bloke"? I always think that when you set out to publicly question someone else's competence, it's better to do so competently.

It’s interesting in following what Ross has said over the years, since he came to Freo, and how he’s adapted. When he first arrived, I’m pretty sure he didn’t know much about Freo and its history with respect to drafts available to an ‘expansion’ club, especially with the gift of what was essentially a state team when the Weagles were formed. On past occasions then, he’s referred to us a blue-collar club; I take it he means that we weren’t born with a silver spoon, like the Weagles were, mentioning a few times that that Freo did not get the same sorts of access to draft picks or WA-based players that the Weagles did. In a presser just the other day, it was interesting to note that he brought up the generous first round draft picks that GWS and the Suns got. Draft-envy, I guess.

Now, he’s being exposed to the fact that some players that Freo targets and can generously pay don’t necessarily want to come to play here, no matter how sweet the deal is. We should celebrate those who want to come (e.g., Bennell) and those who choose to stay (Pav, Mundy, Sandi, and hopefully, Neale), but I think Ross is now fully realising that we are somewhat ‘up against it’ when it comes to recruiting and playing in a ‘national’ competition. I wouldn’t get too cut up about ‘losing’ a guy like Hooker because, as it turns out, he had turned down a past offer to come to the Weagles to stay with Essendon. I personally think that’s why the Cockburn facility is so important as a ‘carrot’ to potential recruits, but that’s my opinion.

As to why we, as a club, did not target some WA-based players in past drafts and recruitment periods when they were available (Darling, Yeo, McGovern spring to mind immediately) is another story.

I'm pretty sure that guy and the Guardian in general have had it in for Freo and Lyon for a long time, so it's not as though he's really put all that much thought into what he's written.

You do have to put quite a bit of thought into how you cut and paste all the anti ROLY/Freo vitriol you have managed to google. After all there is a lot to troll through.

The Eagles silver spoon has lost since rusted. They got a head start but Freo didn't. That's ancient history. WC have not had any special advantage for years.

When Lyon talks about blue collar club he is diplomatically saying we got very few stand out players to make the team successful, so his approach is to get everyone working extremely hard.

Guess what Ross, it still ain't enough. The journeymen still need decent skills.
