Working class origins? Just because an indigenous boy might get a scholarship to board at a high fee paying school doesn't mean he is suddenly middle or even upper class.
And just because public school is public doesn't make it a matter of a rough place to grow up bristling with lack of potential, privilege and a constant battling against the odds. That perception is archaic and farcical.
If this fact surprised the numptees on the box interviewing Max Gawn, that and it doesn't really surprise me. I would be more surprised if Melbourne hadn't recruited Gawn because he was an unknown quantity from a public school. Quality is quality at the end of the day.
As someone previously pointed out, the loss is local footy, local sport in fact. That is something of an injustice in the broader scheme of things, as is the continuous pilfering and slandering levelled at the public system, itself far more damaging to our kid's futures than Melbourne only recruiting four or five players outside their usual demographic.
