DK, Fyfe will be paid his full contract regardless of how many games he plays in 2016.

The details of AFL player salaries are disclosed in the AFL Annual Report each year.

For the record, in 2015 only 4 players were paid $1m+.
2 players were paid $900k-$1m.
3 players were paid $800k-$900k.
21 players were paid $700k-$800k.
21 players were paid $600k-$700k.
44 players were paid $500k-$600k.
85 players were paid $400k-$500k.
131 players were paid $300k-$400k.
153 players were paid $200k-$300k.
188 players were paid $100k-$200k.
65 players were paid $60k-$100k.
1 player was paid $0-$60k.
s.afl.com.au/staticfile/AFL%20Tenant/AFL...AnnualReport2015.pdf (page 111).

Tom Liberatore, Eric Mackenzie and Jaeger O'Meara were believed to be the highest paid players who didn't play a single game ($600-$700k bracket).

Whether Hooker is worth the money is one very important point.

That we can't attract players even when offering to make them one of the 10 highest paid players in the league is another.

And for the record, when Hooker won the Best and Fairest award in 2015 for Essendon, he averaged less points per game than Hurley. Hurley played 3 games less and was runner up.

Did we not try to get Frawley who went to Hawthorn for $? What was our offer? He's now a premiership winner. That's what it's about.

Fyfe is the reigning brownlow medallist and clearly the best player in the competition but I guarantee he's not the highest paid player in the game. I don't understand your problem with the amount offered to Hooker, how is that money better spent sitting unused in our salary cap year after year? We've had plenty of cash spare every season to throw our hat in the ring with big money over the last 5 years and Hooker was fitting the bill perfectly.

Why do you care so much about Hurley?! He's irrelevant!
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.

Because of Freo's attempt to get Hooker, he will now be paid by Essendon, a reported 800k/yr for 5 years, which still puts him in the top 10 (or thereabouts) paid players in 2017 ... even if it is less than what Freo offered.

I think managers of high profile players know that by bringing Fremantle in to the circle, their client's value goes up ... often above their real value. Even if a player has no intention of leaving a club, it's just good business to pretend Freo is an option ... especially while we are offering overs.

During last years trade, I also thought McCarthy was too expensive for, at the time, numbers being thrown around of $700k/yr. Afterwards, it seems those numbers were exaggerated and McCarthy was never offered that from Freo.

Who was the poor bugger who got less than $60k?

Also, I note that Cloke is likely to be on half his pay at Collingwood next year after failing to meet some contractual targets - could be a good time to get him on the cheap? Having said that, Tabs is not far off from greatness.

I'm no expert with the Salary Cap, but given each club has to spend at least 95% of their salary cap, at best Freo can only have about $500k spare ... which I doubt they do. I suspect it would normally be less than that.
When a huge deal gets offered to a new recruit, that money ultimately comes from the pockets of the other players. For example, if Freo had have got Hooker, then Pav definitely would have retired freeing up several $100s of thousands of dollars ... but that certainly would not be enough for the $1m (especially when over $100k of Pavs is not counted in the Salary Cap due to him being a Veteran). So other costly players would need to be cut at end of 2016 or have reduced payments to accommodate.
You then need to consider if you want to make a play for someone like Hogan in 2017, then you need to manage your Salary Cap and contracts to ensure you have big funds available for that year. Fyfe, Neale and other valued players will want salary increases or we risk losing them to other clubs (especially Neale).

and then what do we do if another club offers 211 closer to $2m per year?

Nelson.
One player earned less than $60,000 in 2015. It is likely to have been Carlton's Ciaran Sheehan, who was named as a nominated rookie ahead of round one but did not play a senior game all season.

The base wage for a rookie last season was $55,440.

Didn't we make an offer to Rance also?
I think it's a not a case of not trying to get top KPPs. It's more than money that's obvious. Girl friends and wives also have a say.

I wrote "his peers", to show some value of what Hooker is worth, he needs to be compared to something ... his peers. It is also his peers who vote for the top50 players and his peers who vote for his Best and Fairest award that apparently goes somewhere towards quantifying Hooker for a value of $1m/yr, even if another key defender in his very same team polled more votes per game in that very same year.

& here I am, explaining "his peers" ... Seriously?
Any takers on what Bondy should have/could have offered Hooker?

Hooker was pick 54 wasn't he?

Doesn't that say something. You can pick good players at any stage of the draft, I am not sure how much more likely you are to pick a quality player early but there have been plenty of duds there too.

I think you need to focus on the draft and pick the players that fit your needs. Its all well and good picking the best player available but you are going to end up with an unbalanced team. Like we have at the moment. We keep picking midfielders as the best available but if you think about it there are a heap more midfielders so the best player will always be a midfielder.

Seems obvious to me that we haven't had the best strategy. Interested to hear how getting the best player is a better strategy.

Saying all of that I do think that some players haven't developed. Clark is one. He looked like he was going to explode 2 years ago, only to become like Hampson (never marks). There are a bunch more like him on our list. Hannath, Apeness, Smith. I would persist with Taberner though, he needs to have more 9 mark games though.

Agree with what someone said about Griffin being nowhere near as good post knee. He was killed by Kreuzer on the weekend. Clark does seem to be a better ruckman as we started winning the taps when he was rucking more.

I for one am looking forward to a bottom out and a rebuild. We have plenty of good mids and need to focus on the KPP section of our list. Cull some deadwood. A year or two to bottom out and come good in 2018-19. Works for the Eagles.

Heard something interesting the other day about Rookies playing on teams. Sydney have 13 upgraded rookies on there list. They played 10 last weekend. We have 10 on our list. Most of the good teams have a few. Richmond have 1. So I think we have slightly better recruiting than we think. Just got to focus.

Quoting the stats of the bloke considered to be the best KPD in the game (Hurley) and saying Hooker has a slightly lower output makes no sense. Never mind the fact stats are the least relevant when talking about KPD's, it has no bearing on Hooker's value. I would personally rate Hooker higher than Hurley based on longevity and experience but it's a fine line and they are both top 5 in the comp atm so it's a stupid thing to point out.

On top of that Hurley is likely to get an even fatter contract than Hooker based on his youth because quality KPD are rare and valuable, regardless of what arbitrary position you consider him to be in the top 100 players of the competition. These players are of great value and you pay them what you have to in order to win them over.

I believe a million per year was a good offer by Freo but clearly they didn't sell the rest of the package very well. Their salesmanship has repeatedly left a lot to be desired by all they've chased and Hooker should have been a slam dunk as a Freo bloke who's already partially aware of the benefits of living and playing football here. Just reminding Cale of the horror show that's been the Bombers over the past few years should have been enough to get him in our corner!

Shane,

while I fully agree the strategy of trying to buy a KPP has been a failure, as I've posted before I do not think this one can be laid at Bond's feet. Hooker turned down an 'apparently larger' offer to remain at Essendon.

There are a number of rumours around about 'compensation' payments and while nobody knows the full details it seems the size of the 'compensation' payments may be conditional on signing back with Essendon.

Like I said, unconfirmed rumours but it may explain why in this case, a larger offer was rejected.

I've been critical of Bond and the way he approaches aspects of his job and I think the club could do better for a football manager . Actually I think they'd almost struggle to do worse but this time, you cannot reasonably blame Bond
