Yes, you can slam the critics like Haselby and Hardie, but at least they're local and have more inside knowledge than those from the Eastern States.
Funnily enough, amongst other things Hardie is also critical of our recruiting efforts.

Our recruiting has been fine, the draft is an inexact science and we haven't enjoyed a top ten pick in a decade!

Piss off Hardie. Hasleby doesn't warrant a response.

Hardie is just annoying because you can't disagree with anything he's written. But it ha to be that bloody obvious for him, to write it. And he probably had help.

You go 0-5, lose to Carlton and all of a sudden everyone's an expert.

Thought the article was fine, interesting points on Ibbotson and also Mzungu and Co when compared to other favourites that continue to play ahead of these guys.
Only thing that I thought was a little out of line was the comparison to Geelong without acknowledging that Geelong have an advantage in their ability to attract established players.

"And if you're constantly the first guy out of the boat, you're going to be asking questions (at the very least in your own head). At some point, Nick Suban, Tendai Mzungu and Ibbotson are going to be wondering "why me?"

That's pretty accurate isn't it. Especially since Suban and Ibbotson had played in every game since Round 1 last year.

In other news, Brad affectionately refers to a mate in the money lending business as "the nude nut" and is vaguely familiar with some of the lyrics in Malcolm McLaren's "Buffalo Girls"

The only statement I found interesting in the article was that comparing Ibbo to Sicily. Sicily has been touted as a player who we could use, and Ibbo has shown he can kick straight, Why not. It would leave a hole in our defence, but if we are kicking more goals that may not be a big problem.

Apart from the usual antipathy re Hardie, few seem to disagree with what he's stated. Possibly the state of play might be as bad as it may seem.

Matt Taberner took nine marks against Carlton. But he's mobile enough that he should do that just about every week and he hasn't shown enough development of strength to wrestle with backmen or footy nous that he can find ways into the game.

I know bashing Taberner (along with Sheridan and Sutcliffe) is currently de rigueur, but I think he's shown improvement in one-on-one contested marking. He took a good one in the Carlton game, and also won a similar contest on the wing in the Norths game (though it wasn't paid as a mark for some reason).

I know, I know: he needs to take more than one a game, blah, blah, blah. But he looks to me to be developing a technique and building into it. I also think it's a bit unfair to bag him for not taking contested marks in front of goals, when it's quite obvious he's being coached not to mark, but to palm it down to the crumbers. Someone in one of the other threads (half-jokingly) suggested that Ballas and Walters should be taking the blame for Taberner's failings. Maybe the joke to seriousness ratio shouldn't even be as high as 1:1.

"...it's a bit unfair to bag him for not taking contested marks in front of goals, when it's quite obvious he's being coached not to mark, but to palm it down to the crumbers".

Really? Is that what he was doing when he butchered Griffin's 'goal' in the last quarter?

When Griffin kicked our 8th goal a little later I'll swear Pav ran back towards the goal square to shepherd Tabs away from the ball.

His stats were impressive but heavily uncontested (17 out of 18 disposals).

I'm not anti-Tabs. He does about as well as his skill set will allow. I doubt he will ever be any better than he is at present.

Very happy to be proven wrong.

No. That was quite obviously a colossal stuff up on his part. Terrible decision, simultaneously good/bad read of the flight (good in the sense of positioning, bad in the sense of not working out that the ball would go over the pack), and deplorable skill error in not holding the mark — though I imagine it would've been called touched over the line even if he did.

But I'm not convinced that you can extrapolate coaching and game plan from exceptional situations like that. Looking at the more routine contests, I've noticed pack contests where Taberner — but also Griffin, and even Pav sometimes — get two hands up to the ball only to palm it down to a crumber (or to where a crumbed should be).

I'm neither pro-Taberner nor anti-Taberner. I certainly don't expect him to become one of the competition's power forwards. But I also don't think that those who occasionally point out his successes or good qualities are in any way arguing that he is anything more than a "second" forward.

Think of Taberner as a 6ft 4 inch lead up high half forward type............who does stupid things some times.

You guys keep measuring him against blokes like Lynch and Hawkins, he aint that type of player.
