It was interesting to hear Lyon say that the current environment is not the time to bring young players in, "you don't want to teach them to play like this".

So if they haven't made changes to a winning team in the past and you don't make changes to a losing team. When do you bring them in?

Sam Collins is 22 and Blakely is 20 with 2 pre-seasons under his belt. All I ask is they play next week and we dont go back to some of the older blokes who did well for Peel. Its fair to expect a team with an ageing list that hasn't won a game yet to kick off the next generation.

I think the club needs a strategy more than it needs a plan right now. Who cares how we are moving the ball, find out who is going to represent the club for the next 10 years and then assess your list accordingly at seasons end.

I just dont think we really know what our long game is right now.

Not sure about this new attacking game plan?

Why are experienced players having difficulty putting it in practice?

A number of reasons, but the fact it didn't exist about a month ago is not to be ignored.

During the week leading up to our round 1 game there was a match sim in progress at training.

Senior player 1 had taken a mark at half back. He spotted a loose team mate 30m away directly to his right and also noted another team mate 40m up the field. He chose to advance the ball where his fellow senior player team mate took a somewhat contested mark. Roly blew his whistle and stopped play. He then chastised senior player 1 for not following the team rule (kick it sideways to the free player).

He then made both players jog laps. True story.

That's why we kick the ball sideways in games.

Neither of those senior players are presently in the senior team.

I think you start with your back 6. Really settle on them.

I would like to see this as our future back line. Spurr, Dawson (or Collins), Ibbo, Mora, A Pearce, Bennell.

And until Bennell is fit put Hill back there. I like Sutcliffe, he is a good player, put him on a wing and in clearances, he is a big fella, can mark and win the ball and is a great runner - his turnovers wont hurt as much up the ground. Grey, Blakely, Sheridan, Weller go through the midfield surrounded by bigger bodied players.

Imagine a half back line with Morabito and Bennell on transition......I can tell you turnovers wont be an issue.

I dont like Sheridan or Sutcliffe behind the ball.

Hill on a HBF is disastrous at the moment. The guy is an outside midfielder / goal kicker. AKA a wingman. Same goes for D. Pearce.

Players who are intercept markers / spot up kickers should be on the Half Back Flank. Here's one - Garrick Ibbotson.

C. Pearce played the HB role serviceably until recently. He has a long penetrating kick which obviously doesn't fit into the "kick it 15m" shite currently on offer.

I think with the current number of long term injuries, Freo now need to concede a top 8 isn't going to happen. (I've conceded that and I was stupid enough to still give them a good chance, and my betting money, prior to the Carlton game).

So you now need to set up shop for 2017 and onwards. To do that, firstly you need to cotton wool 211, Fyfe, Bennell, Johno, etc... Give those coming back from injury in the Magoos, such as Apeness, Morabito, Yarran, Balic, etc... plenty of time to build their confidence without any pressure.

Then, get that defense sorted (I'm with you Hypen, except Sutcliffe is very poor in a marking contest). Find your players that can short pass kick 20m accurately and make the right decisions. You almost need to go back to a 2012 Lyon defensive plan and teach the players to get numbers to where the ball is going (we used to do it). Turnovers will still be high and games will most likely be lost. The Slime (and the WeePoos) are very good at passing to a player on a lead where another player can provide support/blocking/crumbing. Freo's turnovers often come from trying to pass to a stationary player with opposition 5metres either side. A small margin of error results in a high risk turnover.
I'm a big believer that the KPPs will come to Freo, once the new Cockburn training facility (and Football Stadium) is in use (but please do not trade Neale). I think Freo have shown enough in recent years for players to have more respect for Freo (than they did 5 years ago).
Gone to bigfooty where there's fewer Docker Haters.

I'm glad people like Polly exist, because among my many weaknesses is an inability to think strategically. I'm maybe one step up from the "kick it long" crowd, but not a big step.

Footy is a tough business, and right now there are a few Freo players who are wondering how they've gone from hero to zero so quickly, Ibbo for one. Subes and De Boer have always been a bit on the outer under Roly, and they too must be wondering if their time is up. Clancee can deliver what Roly wants, but struggles to be fast enough to do it. Barlow keeps getting played out of position. It was a breath of fresh air to see him back where he should be.

When we see a player struggling for confidence, maybe its because Ross has lost confidence in them. Last year he made the decision that Sheridan was the new Duffield, and Duff was gone. It was a great shame to see him play his last game looking lost out there.

And I am going to blame Ross for this. He should be asking his players to do what they *can* do, instead of trying to get them to do what they can't. The players he'll be left with will be those who slavishly follow the plan, whether its any good or not. Maybe that is what Ross wants, but I'm not so sure. I'm reminded of 2006, when the players told Chris Connolly that they could play some good footy, if he'd just let them - and they did.

We started well last year then things inexplicably fell apart and we limped home. This year things never got going.
When Roly came over things were slow to start and he built the best defensive unit in the country. Now he is trying to do something new (for us) with lesser players. We shouldn't be surprised that it is taking time. Whatever it is he is trying has been a big flop so far but that doesn't mean he shouldn't persist but it does mean he will make changes. We should expect that. He is an experienced coach and I reckon he will work through it as best he can with the players he has available. This is a rebuild and its going to take time. Lets be frank most of our best are gone injured or dimmed. The best we can hope for is a little excitement (and a lot of heartache) as we watch the show unfold. Thats our lot for now.

Yes Larkin, and the best available is getting smaller by the week. Last time we went without Sandi for extended games, Griffen had not done his knee, and the difference in Griffen's ruckwork pre and post-knee op has been huge. This I reckon is where a lot of our problems start and finish. Put Sandi into the last 3 games fit and firing and we would probably win all 3. Griff pre op would see us win 2 of the 3.

Yeah you are pretty much on the money.. There is manic stuff going on.. Brady Grey is hard as a cats head but I also feel he is a mad rusher.. The whole team really looks like they have had to much pre-work out powder and have been whipped into a frenzy.. Need to move the ball quicker but still know when to go slow.. Darcy Tucker is very composed and looks like he has a bit of time for a first gamer though.. Very happy so far with this selection at 27
