On your 'backing the players in' point Yeti, Roly has always favoured continuity. From the outside, it looked like he wanted the players to play a role, and was happy to keep the same team so long as the team was winning. I liked that philosophy, because it reduces the chances of players chasing their own kicks, and incentives playing to a structure.

Continuity is more difficult when you also want to evaluate different players, and it's going to be hard for Roly to balance those two things. It's also hard to get a read on the players when there doesn't appear to be any coherent structure on the field. Guys like C Pearce and Mzungu thrived under Roly's system for a while, but guys like Grey are more likely to look bad in a bad team.

I think what is required right now is some soft skills. I don't think relentlessly holding them accountable when they are clearly trying hard is doing any thing other than crushing them. He is a COACH: mentoring, teaching, developing and building trust.

That is what they need right now and I am assuming they are not getting it based on what I hear of the man.

I'm not sure Roly is that sort of coach. I reckon he fancies himself as more of a manager and keeps himself at a distance from his players. That's ok, but you need some balance in your coaching panel, and I think Roly leans heavily on his assistants for the touchy-feely stuff.

Well that's a concern, especially when the assistants were found at the bottom of a weeties box.

If Roly relies on his assistants, and they are sapping the confidence of some players, then some assistant needs sacking. And that is Roly's job. I did notice Roly talking up the performance of Mzungu and De Boer at Peel. In general his attitude seems more encouraging. Just hope it works.

I'd like to see atleast one or two assistants sacked mid-year and someone with experience given a run. Why not give Jason Akermanis a gig?

He must have taken those marks when playing back yeti, cos only one resulted in a goal and to my eyes at the ground he didn't,t take another in the forward line. Last time I checked forwards role is to take grabs and have kicks at goal. Ergo he only took one mark that remotely meant anything..

So if Lyon is a manager then Capt. Kick has been coaching Freo when they were winning?

Drubbing,

using that logic nobody should be retained on our list. Pav, as a forward, missed 3 gettable shots. Mayne dropped marks all day and he's missed easy goals for 2 years. Johnno has dropped marks, Dawson refuses to take any. ditto Mundy, Fyfe, Neale.

Fact is, for all the criticism that he can't take marks, he took 8 yesterday and was one of our better performers. If the coach plays him down back, then he can't be criticised for not playing as a forward. Saying you'll only count marks if they are in the forward line is worse than dumb.

Give him the credit he deserves and just admit your comments were and are clearly wrong

Most current Key forwards take a number of lead up marks beyond goal kicking distance. Probably only the lazy ones don't.

Good on Taberner going into the backline to take some grabs to help out.....not many others were capable of marking anything.

Yay, Tabs tried hard and took 7 marks on a back flank. He also butchered almost every resulting kick and several of them resulted in Carlton goals. Effort is great but you need more than that, especially playing as a KPF. It's why CHF is considered the most important position on the ground and key forwards are worth so much more than any other player, it's a bloody hard position to play and you need a strong and wide reaching skill set.

Tabs doesn't have that ability and skill set but we don't have much else because we refused to use our draft picks when we could on blokes who might have had a shot at being a decent KPP. Sure the midfield is where the game is won and lost but you still need someone to kick it to and we neglected it pretty badly. Now we're stuck with Tabs and grasping at straws trying to see positives in him.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

Yes your right yeti, tabs is awesome and the future of our forward line. He'll be the Zac Dawson of full forwards.

Pavlich should have retired last year, and he knew it.. Read his book, his career was already history. Something changed his mind. He probably realised without him, they only had tabs and Lyon left it this late to get regular game time into him. He's there for desperate reasons, and I'm not going to bag him for that.

However, it's moot now, because our injury list contains the backbone of our side, so we are rooted this year.

Now we are stuffed with up to 4 of our leaders both on and off the ground for some time, roly should address a few playing issues around the ground...one glaring problem is at the contests we have up to three or more players going for the ball and all on the ground trying to smother or win it'''..A very famous coach once told our team that you are actually of no use to the team being on the ground especially in a free for all after the ball...if your teammate wins it, who can he give it to if you are scrambling on all fours with him ? as our team loses games the players are losing their structure so getting clearances is a non event...back to basics , so there are always players on their feet around the contest to receive and deliver, with a bit of space to balance and kick properly....except for sheridan
