I did an exercise of looking at Freo's and the Slime's recruiting record since the 2011 draft (picked that date as that's when Roly came on board with Freo).
Freo have had 24 players play at least 1 game out of those recruited since the 2011 draft. The Slime have had 19.
The total number of games for Freo's 24 players is 567 matches, for the Slime 467.

Freo's major contributors are;
87 games Lee Spurr (2011 Rookie)
77 games Danyle Pearce (2012 Free Agent PA)
75 games Lachie Neale (2011 Draft #58)
74 games Zac Dawson (2011 Delisted pre season SK)
73 games Cameron Sutcliffe (2011 Draft #71)

The Slimes major contributors are;
78 games Josh Hill (2011 trade from WB)
64 games Jamie Cripps (2012 trade from SK)
48 games Sharrod Wellingham (2012 trade from CO)
42 games Elliot Yeo (2013 trade from BL)
39 games Mark Hutchings (2012 Draft #60)

In 2016, Freo have had 13 players recruited since the 2011 draft, play at least 1 game this season, the Slime have had 12.

A lot of those numbers are very misleading. For example we blooded a lot of young blokes in games we threw towards the end of the season and most of our games tally is made up by a couple of mature recruits (Dawson and Pearce) who will be done very soon for us.

Not to mention this season our side has been a bit of a revolving door due to poor form and injury.

So what this suggests to me is that we are ordinary at picking players in the early rounds, but apparently very good at picking players in the later rounds. So we should really be trading our first and second round picks with other clubs for lots and lots of picks around 40 and below.

Imagine the list we could create without the distraction of all those highly fancied, top end draft picks!

& what the earlier statistics tell me is that it's hard to argue a case that the Slime have recruited better than Freo since 2011, when Freo have managed to get an extra 100 games out of ours. Plus, I believe Lachie Neale is clearly the best recruit to come out of either teams recruiting since 2011 ... and I think by the end of the season, we'll be saying Harley Bennell is clearly the best.

& Bizkit, to be fair to your comment, both teams currently have 10 players in their seniors list that have played 10 games or more and were recruited since 2011 ( & 12 players each who have played 5 games or more).

McGovern hurts, as much for touchy-feely culture and club history reasons as for anything else.

Besides that, I thought it was a mistake not to grab Jetta when the opportunity arose. I think we were too focused on the "secure a huge kpf at all costs" line, and felt that going for Bennell over another potential kpf was already a compromise. Or maybe Jetta had no interest in Freo... I don't know. But if it's true that GWS simply did not return calls when 2 first rounders were on the table for McCarthy, then I can't help but the club should've been making a serious offer for Jetta as a contingency.
