The Slime '05 & '06 were lucky to win one premiership. With the midfield they had they should have won at least two and maybe more. If they had a better forward line they would have.

Likewise with Port Power but they had a beast in Warren Tredrea who was kicking close to a 100 goals season so they did manage to snare one.

Are you forgetting Brisbane had a couple of handy power forwards in Jonathan Brown and Alastair Lynch?

Collingwood had Leigh Brown, Chris Dawes and Travis Cloke as their KP forwards..

I would agree Sydney did not have much of a forward line in 2012 but only won the GF because Hawthorn did not kick straight and Adam Goodes is big enough to play at full forward.

Geelong won premierships with Mooney, Hawkins and Podsiadly.

Plus all these teams have had exceptional players in defensive key positions and much better KPP forwards and backs than we have had since Lyon took over.

At our very best we had Pavlich at one end and McPharlin and Johnson at the other.

Come next year we will only have Johnson at one end of the ground and Taberner at the other.

Wow, so in 15 years of premierships, you've dismissed the importance of the midfield which included the likes of; Judd, Cousins, Ablett, Bartel, J.Selwood, Voss, Black, Akermanis, Mitchell, Kennedy, Goodes, Swan, Pendlebury, etc, etc ... and you've responded with such KP Forwards as Tredrea (which I had already conceded), Dawes, Cloke, Mooney, Hawkins (who kicked less than 30 goals in 2011), A.Lynch (who only kicked bags with Brisbane's elite midfield), J.Brown (was nowhere near his peak in '01-'03 with only about 30goals/yr) and Podsiadly (really, another KP Forward who only kicked plenty when Geelong's midfield was firing).

If Freo can go out and get a Tredrea for the same price as a quality mid, then great go do it, but that's not likely.

Good question CA but Im pretty sure that was the case, I stand to be corrected though as I havent exactly studied the replay in any great detail.
I recall RTB mentioning that one player had let his structures down badly that day and I always assumed it was Duff..

I'm certainly not dismissing the importance of having a champion midfield if you want to win a flag. I agree the engine room is the most important part of the team.

I am making the point it is easier to build this kind of midfield using a mixture of first round draft picks, rookie draft picks or by trading them in than it is to build a solid forward line and defence.

KPP have a rarity factor and it is difficult to acquire them outside of the first round of the draft. Clubs are reluctant to trade the good ones for this reason so if you get a pick in the top ten I say there is an argument to pick the best KPP available.

Of the players you listed and a couple of others this is their draft position:

Goodes - 43
Swan - 58
Black - 31
Mitchell - 36
Ling - 38
Hird - 79
Kirk - Rookie Draft
Priddis - Rookie Draft

Akermanis - Zone Selection
Ablett - Father/Son
Kennedy - Father Son
Bartel - 8
Selwood - 7
Judd -3
Pendlebury - 5
Voss - ?

I agree there are some champion midfielders taken in the top ten as well but there are next to no champion KPP taken outside of the top ten.

There is a good chance the club are going to be in a position at the end of the year where they will have some early picks so it will be interesting to see what they decide to do. Apparently our midfield is crap this year so based on that we will be picking more midfielders to replace the dud ones we have.

Saw an article that pointed out that the Pies had given their first draft pick for next year to GWS in exchange for someone. When they made that trade, they didn't realise they were giving away a top 3 draft pick...

Bit like us and Harley: second round pick from memory.

It wasn't part of the Harley deal, it was a separate trade.
Freo traded their 2016 2nd round pick to get an extra pick in the (2015) draft.
That is, Gold Coast gave Freo 2015 picks 35 & 61 for Freo's picks 56 and 2016 2nd round pick.
Freo went on and got Harley Balic (for 35, come 38) and Shane Yarrran (for 61).
At the time, I could understand the move, and if Yarran was playing for us now, and Balic's wrist wasn't so bad, then it was probably a good move, but with the benefit of hindsight and where we currently stand, not one of our best trades.

KK, yep I agree with what you're saying about the difficulty in finding / drafting a good KPP (and I like your last post). I just get my hackles up when I see anything that seems to be downplaying the importance of the midfield. Especially, when I believe I can show compelling examples of why quality midfielders are more important than KPPs.

Recently, I keep hearing talk of how Freo should possibly use Neale as trade bait to help secure a KPP. I'm sorry, but the chances of Freo getting a KPP that will be more productive than Neale is very slim. If Neale wants to leave WA / Freo, then that's a different matter, but otherwise, it's just plain stupid talk. I really don't care what draft number Fyfe, or Mundy or Neale were drafted at, the point is they are extremely talented and extremely hard to find midfielders. Are quality KPPs harder to find? ... I reckon you're right, they are ... but I don't believe that it necessarily makes them more valuable. Which is why I try to show recent premiers and the quality midfields those teams had/have, often without standout KP Forwards. Heck I reckon the Slime's Josh Kennedy is as good a forward going around, yet he's ranked and voted as the 15th most valuable player in the AFL (by AFL players). Buddy Franklin is the only KPP in the top10, the other 9 are midfielders.

Both are important, however the most recent trend from a team gifted massive draft concessions was to load up on KPP, Forwards in particular because the knew they would hold the most currency in the current market, GWS didn't need Cameron, Patton, Boyd & McCarthy. But they knew there would be some "go home" factor and that other teams would play a price for a tall spearhead to build a forward line around. They got maximum value from the Boyd trade, securing a team captain and a first round pick, they botched the McCarthy situation and Patton is still a work in progress after his injury issues but I doubt they'd let him go cheaply.

St Kilda picked Paddy McCartin at number 1 because they believed with captain sook retiring soon they'd need a new focal point down forward, not because he was the best available player.

Personally I don't think going to the draft looking for KPP right now would be of any benefit anyway, as has been stated many times before very rarely will you get one that can make an impact straight away. If we were to draft one now all our 25 yo guns will be 29 by the time said KPP is hitting his straps.

We need to secure a ready to go KPP, Hogan is probably out of reach, however if you look at the success St Kilda are having with Josh Bruce it shows there are players out there on the cusp of other teams who can found who can have immediate impact.
