TOPIC: Best draft pick

So would you rather have 3 all Australian midfielders in your side or one of each playing key forward, midfielder and defender?

Is Nic Naitanui one of the All Australian midfielders?

When I say all Australian I actually mean a very very good footballer. Naitanui is an athletic player but not a footballer.

rookie mistake, KK. that looks like a question from Shane, but is what is politely referred to as a rhetorical device...

Naitanui is the equivalent of a rhetorical device. Stupid.

Without a doubt, I'd take the 3 midfielders.

Unless you finish bottom for many years having picks in the top 10 does not happen regularly. The problem with using high draft picks when you have them to build an exceptional midfield is there is no guarantee you will fill that void of KPPs later on.

There is a far better chance of success by using high draft picks on KPP and then building a serviceable midfield around it. Seemed to work for Hawthorn when they selected Franklin and Roughead.

KK, I thought Hawthorn are still dominating even without Roughead and Franklin playing. Because they still have the likes of Mitchell, Lewis, Hodge, Smith etc... playing in the midfield.

I really really struggle with this widespread infatuation with KPPs.
Look at the premiers of the recent modern era. Apart from Port Adelaide's 2004 premiership, largely due to brilliance of a real quality KPF in Tredrea, pretty much all the premiers have had dominating midfields. Often they have had very poor forward KPPs.
For example;
- the Slime '05 & '06, Judd, Cousins, Kerr (Cox) had Q. Lynch as their KP Forward.
- Brisbane had Black, Lappin, Voss, Akermanis, Headland, Power.
- Collingwood (2010) had Swan, Pendlebury, Didak, Thomas (Jolly) with Travis Cloke as their KP Forward.
- Sydney (2012) had Kennedy, Hannebery, OKeefe, Jack, McVeigh and used Goodes and Jetta as their Forward goal kickers.
- Geelong had Ablett, J.Selwood, Bartel, Corey, Enright, Ling and using Stevie J and Mooney as their goal scorers.

People are very quick to forget the years Pav had to play in the midfield instead of as a KPP because we just couldn't win the contested ball out of the middle to get it in to forward 50.
For the same reason I cringe everytime I hear talk of Fyfe playing up forward (with Barlow) while we are now being smashed in the centre clearances and stoppages ... that was our stand out strength over the last few years because of our big bodied mids.

Natakneey reminds me more of a rotating vibrating device.
Big mids rule and two or three adequate talls forward straighten those mids up. Walters and Ballas pick up the slack for those talls. Even with our team as it is we managed to outscore the Roos 12 goals to 8 after the first quarter. The last quarter let us down but at least we were in the game with a chance.

Even the Hawks flag teams had big midfielder types kicking their goals in finals, it was Bruest and co who slaughtered us in 2013 with their straight kicking for goal. The much maligned ZD proves that even a useless tall can keep an AA KPP quiet in finals footy if the midfield is doing it's job

Gunston also put us to the sword that day and his opponent was unfortunately Zed.

I think he was second in the voting for the Normie.

Good point Rocky. That would be hard because I don't think even The Fist himself knows what he's up to sometimes.

I thought Duffield played on Gunston that day.....Luke Mac on Buddy, ZacD on Roughy and changing ruckman and kep them down

I was pretty sure it was Zed but if it was Duffman why the hell would we have played him on Gunston? The height difference would be huge?
