I don’t think the game plan is the issue at all. At times yesterday they looked sharp and composed, at other times, all too frequently, they turned it over with terrible skills. Our bottom 5 players are extremely weak and our middle tier are just so so. If not for Zac, who played great yesterday by the way, Pav, Fyfe, Neal & Griffin, we would have been spanked yesterday. Seriously, what the hell is Pearce doing to add any value. His job is to hit targets yet he now turns it over more often than not. Taberner is a spud who did nothing at all. 17 points - 17. Half of those were gettable by AFL standards. Our skills are atrocious and just not up to AFL level. We get goals by winning clearances, hacking it forward and hoping the chaos creates a spillage goal. Hardly any leads, marks to set shot goals. When we do take a mark inside 50 its cross your fingers time. Whilst other teams have the cattle to play a regular forward line that can kick straight, we don’t, pure and simple.

It's probably worth a go shoving Danyle Pearce deep forward, he has a pretty good knack for kicking great instinctual goals, plus it'd take the pressure off his flaky decision making. You could swap Walters to a more permanent wing position. They definitely need to be doing all they can to bring Hill back into top form, he's the key I reckon.

D Pearce is an enigma. We are at our best when he is playing well. His run and long kicking is really important. Problem is, when he's not at his best his turnovers really hurt the team.

I suspect if Harley B ever makes it to the team, Pearce might find getting a game a little more difficult. Personally, I wouldn't mind seeing them both out there together.

With the key outs yesterday I wasn't expecting a win, and when we started as we did I thought that was the way the game would pan out. I think Griffin, Neale, Pav, Alex Pearce, Walters, Weller, Dawson, Ballantyne and Fyfe were incredibly courageous, and if they'd had the same effort from our other team members, we might have done it. Of course, the sub-WAFL errors didn't help. As we know, one of the biggest issues we have is a lack of marking forwards, and as we are a WA team who has made finals for several years running, we haven't been able to either lure any here or draft any talented young forwards. It seems to me that if we are to do this, we need to have a very poor year or so on the ladder. Well, that plus GWS can stop wasting the possibly stellar career opportunities of a homesick WA forward. It's painful to watch and makes for a depressing season, but if we continue to limp through seasons and play finals, we aren't ever going to win a flag.

We need someone like Weller or Tucker to have a stunning breakout season so that we have something to trade with for Hogan. Picks alone won't make it happen.

Stephen Hill is kicking with his right foot more often, it doesn't look as classy as his left but it's still pretty effective. I'm glad to see he's still looking to improve his game at the risk of an unforced error.

Comparing the 2001 R4 team to the 2016 R4 team was fun:

01 B: Antoni Grover, Shane Parker, Anthony Jones.
16 B: Lee Spurr, Zac Dawson, Garrick Ibbotson.
01 HB: Heath Black, Leigh Brown, James Walker.
16 HB: Cam Sutcliffe, Michael Johnson, Tom Sheridan.
01 C: Shaun McManus, Paul Hasleby, Matthew Carr.
16 C: Nic Suban, Stephen Hill, Danyle Pearce.
01 HF: Clive Waterhouse, Matthew Pavlich, Andrew Shipp.
16 HF: Alex Pearce, Matthew Pavlich, Michael Walters.
01 F: Justin Longmuir, Tony Modra, Troy Cook.
16 F: Chris Mayne, Matt Taberner, Hayden Ballantyne.
01 R: Daniel Bandy, Adrian Fletcher, Peter Bell.
16 R: Jon Griffin, Nat Fyfe, Lachie Neale.
01 I: Brad Wira, Jason Norrish, Brad Bootsma. Daniel Metropolis.
16 I: Michael Barlow, Lachie Weller, Hayden Crozier, Ed Langdon.

Some tough calls in there: Bandy v Griffin, Walker v Sheridan, Young Pav v Old Pav, Bell v Neale and Grover v Spurr.

I had 2001 Freo winning 13-9 against 2016 and four of those wins for the current mob came from the bench. Maybe there's too much nostalgia. Clearly if you threw Bennell, Mundy and Sandilands in the frame there'd be some more "wins".

Trade Weller, Goodie. Please don't even think it. It will be hard enough to keep him from going back east in a club that will struggle for a couple of years and he is exactly the sort of quick player we need. Seems to have a good footy brain too, good decision maker - and judging from a couple of reactions yesterday a genuine team player.

Looking back at the 2001 team, there was some real talent in FFC.
Just some better kicking, handball, general use of the ball and top4 could have been achieved.
Unfortunately Freo did not learn from the past, that players with kicking skills should be a high priority.
Having a great marking and goal kicking Tony Modra at FF, only to have the ball go over his head or bounce in front of him was gut wrenching. It's 2016 and Pav is close to retiring and the common theme throughout has been kicking skills and entry into the forward 50.
To think, we could play the Hawthorn attack style with short accurate kicking was laughable at best, especially with the current best22.
Hopeful when players return from injury and the injection of youth with good kicking skills the second half of the season may bring euphoria as that last game did in 2001. Hopefully we will have many wins and not wait til the season is over to show it.
Go the Dockers, I know they are better than this, I just hope they do!

I went to every home match in 2001. By about round 8 I decided we'd need to win away before we could win at home: the crowd was so down the team felt like they were trying to play with lead ankle weights on.

A lesson on being a supporter. Play your part.

Totally agree J2, we can all have our opinions and change the team being the super coaches we are, but when my team crosses the line to play anything less than 100% support is a non-negotiable.

If we trade Weller my daughters will blow the club up.

2001 was my first year as a member. Rd1 loss to Carlton by 1pt set the course.

I don't now what part of the crowd you guys were in during 2001 but we were cheering on everything and having a great time regardless of the results. The crowd enjoying the spectacle made the footy enjoyable despite the scoreline and watching some of the incredible acts of some stars and a bunch of talented kids was fantastic.

The people at those games may have only numbered in the low 20 thousands but they were die hards who loved the game and the club. Not only that but they tended to be more balanced and positive people who supported the players and had a good time rather than the large number of fair weather supporters who would later jump on the bandwagon and attend games.

Now the fans have been conditioned by the Steve's and RL to only care about wins and the end result instead of the beauty of the game and skills of the players. Asking for patience and a measured look at such a horrible start to the season flies in the face of their corporate message from the last 5 years.

It's not a good sign when you look back on the seasons of the early 2000's more fondly than the present.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.
