If you want to go back to mediocrity, you can buy the 2001 Freo season on dvd. It's in the bargain bin underneath the Ben Allan bobble dolls.

This team is bad. But it still would have beaten the 01 team. They were bloody awful. Shane Parker gets angry when I mention it. Which I've only done once. You don't want to see Shane angry

At the ground today I was sitting just aside of the Docker cheer squad and it is very, very apparent that our Victorian sisters and brothers don't see any value (at all) in our 150 game achiever. The vociferous accusations from the Freo "faithful" directed at Zac Dawson when he was close to the boundary had me cringing.

After 150 games "Sliding Daws " is showing some leadership and more composure than previously.
Taberner reminded me of Beaker from Sesame St, he's a rookie draft selection.
Apeness is the one we are waiting for, add Yarran and Bennell to the forward line and see how Pav is freed up to play a cameo role.

The deficit in a statistical sense is that in previous seasons one or two or all three of Elvis, First Johnno and Ibbotson would have chalked up 25+ possessions with 10 marks apiece, minimum. Keep A. Pearce in for the rest of the season. Taberner too.
And we are going to come back from this brink, and it will be this year. Easy.

I was thinking about that 2001 season recently.

I know Damian Drum was sacked after the Sydney game in Round 7, but I think it was pending after that loss to Brisbane in Round 5.

In that game we were a couple of goals up and looking good about 10 minutes into the last quarter and then Brisbane ended up kicking 13 goals for the quarter.

Up to that point, Brisbane had a 1W 3L start to the season, and nobody would have thought at the time that they'd end up being the 2001 Premiers.

Could be the biggest test of his career if we don't get a few wins on the board sooner rather than later. I would prefer to reserve judgment until Sandi, Mundy and Bennell are fit and have a few games under their belt to see where we are really at. If we don't improve then hopefully we get McCarthy and Hogan to set up next season.
The ball will be in Roly's court to either a) refine the gameplan and get the team fit and firing or b) a complete rebuild hopefully culminating in a premiership before his tenure is up.

"be careful what you wish for" springs to mind reading many of these informed assessments of Ross Lyons ability. Last season he was set upon by all and sundry for being too defensive and ugly in his style of football. Now he is changing the teams style to fast open high scoring football he is a coach with no idea or plan? It seems he is damned either way. Here are some indisputable facts, he has been Freos most successful coach, he is the only coach ever to take Freo to a GF (and did it in only his second year at the club). If you sack him who replaces him? Ask the current coach of Carlton how easy it is to coach at AFL level, this is the same guy who had a perfect win loss ratio when he was fill in coach at the Hawks, his answer may be a little different now he is responsible for the whole deal and the buck stops with him.
