I still don't see our problems as player ones - despite some big names missing from our line-up. Nor do I think that Harley, Yarran or The Ape coming in will be season saviours.

Not at all - what I have seen is 4 different teams beat us in the same way. There is a world of difference between the teams, but they were identical in the manner they beat us. In other words, there is a fail-safe strategy for beating Freo out there and it appears that everyone knows it. That is the problem. That is a strategic problem, it is structural and it is the responsibility of the coaching staff to resolve.

Plan 'A' for 2016 is clearly a stinker, Plan 'B' is to assume 2015 is still valid - it isn't, that one is gone. We don't need a Plan 'C', we need a new Plan 'A' where the opposition's fail-safe method of winning is proven to be wrong.

That plan "A", polly, is that the one that says, "Lose the centre clearance and let the opposition go straight down the ground and kick a goal"?

Plan A, Plan B...it's all too predictable.

What we need is Plan Rhombus

No one will see that coming.

What Lyon needs is Plan Mobius.Because hawthorn are the team capable of turning everyone else inside out.

Although his spreadsheet will probably crash trying to implement it, what with the requirement to win by 22 points, being a hidden macro.

1. We are missing Sandi big time hence losing clearances at centre bounces and stoppages. Our defence is under constant pressure as a result.
2. Turnovers due to skill errors and poor decision making is killing us. Leads to loss of confidence.
3. We are conceding over 100 points in games compared with 70 points in previous seasons. That's due to losing clearances and defence failures. The difference of 30+ points has been our losing margin in the last three games.
4. We have kicked over 100 points in two of our losses. This says it's not all due to problems up forward.

Here's some thoughts. Backline needs to step up - Collins Dawson Spurr/Johnson Pearce Ibbotson is the go. Langdon to rotate down back. Midfield - Hill Neale Fyfe/Pav (rotate thru CHF), Griff (til Sandi gets back) Mundy? Grey, Tucker, Suban/D Pearce.
Obviously, Bennell, Sandi and Blakley at some time in the future.
Forwards - Crozier Pav/Fyfe Weller Walters Hannath Taberner Ballatyne.

I believe it's the midfield. It generally is.

When we were winning last year, our midfield was firing. Often our forward structure wasn't, but our mids were good enough to win the game for us. When the midfield is firing, everything is easier. Turnovers are less because you are getting 5 and 6 players to the ball and decision making suddenly carries less risk. When a turnover occurs, you still have numbers around the ball to win the contested ball back.

For years I wished for a day that Freo had a quality midfield. We had the best Ruck, but were losing clearances. Roly comes along, Sandi finally has the likes of Mundy, Barlow and Fyfe firing (plus Neale, Hill and D.Pearce) and Freo start winning well.
Now we are missing 211 and Mundy (and Bennell) and once again the finger pointing starts and the blame once again is the forwards, the backs, Roly's game plan, the new AFL laws, the interchanges limits, the recruiting, no KPPs, no youth, etc... everything but the engine room of most wins ... the midfield.
Do yourself a favour and look at our past seasons. Look at the stats. The Hit Outs, the stoppages, the clearances, the contested possessions, the inside 50s, the goals, the wins. The correlation is strong. Even when the forwards have poor goal conversion, if the mids are firing, you can still win games. If you're getting beaten in the midfield ... well good luck and you might as well hope for umpiring bias the likes that the Slime gets, 'coz even with Hogan up forward, you're going to struggle.
We've got 211 for maybe 50 more games. There's talk of Neale leaving. I don't see any of our young guns being quality mids of the future (compare Weller's stats to Fyfe, Neale or Hill at that age). That's the danger for me ... not KPPs or Hogan, but the mids. Suban, Mzungu, De Boer, C.Pearce, an aging D.Pearce, a slowing Barlow ... and I don't see anybody coming through to replace these guys. The likes of Sheridan, Sutcliffe and Crozier are major causes of our turnover numbers, but we haven't got anyone better.
If 211, Mundy, Bennell, Fyfe, Neale can get and stay fit, I still believe Freo will make the 8. But in my opinion, the current form is a sign of the future, a reminder of the past, and that concerns me.

Wingard, Boak, Hartlett and Grey for Lachie Neale and Taberner.

Sorry, gotta stop second guessing Bond's tactics.

Even with the midfield firing we aren't good enough to win a flag. Last year proved they can't sustain form fitness and pressure all year, to make a small and too wasteful forward line, win games.

Great post dockerknockers. The age factor just can't be ignored with our midfield. Aside from Fyfe and Neale it is hard to make a long term case for many of them. One positive I do see is Sandilands easily playing till at least 35 if he wants to. But because so many of our other mids are approaching the end soon we will have no choice but to blood youth and get games into them and see whether they can cut it or not. This will mean playing guys week after week to see if they can step up. Some will and some won't and this will cost us games until we figure it out. I think Ross Lyon is a fantastic coach and have faith in him but the next couple of years could be tough.
For all of our focussing on midfielders in recent drafts there doesn't seem to be many waiting in the wings especially when you compare them to the up and coming midfielders at other clubs. Tucker and Blakely are the most likely. Weller looks a long term prospect. The jury is out on Langdon. Crozier hasn't come on and neither has Sheridan. I think Ethan Hughes could be a find but needs to be tried. We have no choice but to be patient but patience is hard in a two-team town.

No Drubbing.
Fremantle were closest in 2013. Our midfield was not good enough. We won the hit outs, but lost the clearances, the contested possession and the inside 50s ... ie. we lost the game.

DK, we lost in 2013 because we kept missing the goals.

Yeah, and while we're at it: all this stuff about 'outside speed' is baloney. We moved the ball up the wing at our best when we had Matt Carr on the wing. Matt Carr wasn't especially fast - not especially, but he was a good size. Nope, what Matt could do was take a mark and bloody well make a long accurate kick on the run. Name me one player that's faster carrying a ball up the wing than a barrel up the guts and I'll change my tune.

Sure, draft some bigs and let them rumble around in the magoos for a few years (if you think that's going to get you anywhere) - we've had a couple 'mellowing' into forwards for a few years now. Me, I would draft a Heath Black/Matt Carr combo any day of the week - simple stuff, get the ball/move the ball. Don't just flick it up in the air like some piece of pizza dough that becomes someone else's dinner, get the ball and move it downfield.

So who are we looking to retire out of the midfield in the next year or two? Mundy? I'm not sure there's too much honest scuttlebutt about Neale leaving at this stage. Bennell is waiting in the wings. The current crop of young fellas haven't had the same opportunities those other guys got in their first years of footy, so the comparison isn't fair. Sure Sandi going is leave a massive hole with ears, but the premiership teams of recent history have hardly had the best ruck in the competition now have they?
