I rekon Tabs biggest problem is he has become gunshy in that he is now afraid to make a mistake for fear of being dropped. The coaches need to get around him and say "listen mate, we are going to back you in for the next 10 games. At the end of that we will assess how you have gone and see where we are at, you just concentrate on your footy and kicking goals".
Back the bloke in instead of smashing his self belief and making him feel responsible for what is happening with the team at the moment. If I recall correctly Tabs was in the side last year when we had our ripping start. He got dropped for most of the second half of the season leaving all the work up forward to Pav and Mayne and that went just swimmingly didn't it.

You couldn't win the Canadian Itadrod dog sled race even if you are the best dog handler, with some of your best dogs out and a few suspect ones. Lyon is doing the best he can with the players available.

Something not mentioned, is the guidance or not being given to players at Peel when they are in the Magoos.

Taking a shot at Fyfes captaincy, as if that had anything to do with the loss, is astounding. The guy lead from the front.

FWIW, After attending the game at Etihad here are some observations:

1. The centre-square setup left a space just behind, defensive goalside of the tap. The 2 early goals were a direct result of us being too agressive forward of the ball. In fact on the second goal, Fyfe ran forward well before the centre clearance lottery had even been decided. This was fixed up soonafter, but surely an assistant coach was executed in the box for that setup.

2. In the first quarter, after we kicked a point or there was a rushed behind..........we seemed genuinely surprised that North would have a kick-in. Many time we failed to man-up that first kick. This was rectified about 20 mins into the quarter, obviously another assistant coach was killed in the box.

4. Around 20mins in the 3rd quarter, just after we took the lead, our forward setup was Ballas, Walters, Weller and Pav. Fyfe was on the pine and Mayne was in the midfield. Don't know where was Tabs. So basically, we'd given up bothering with Tabs or Mayne taking a fwd 50 grab. We were looking for chaos balls. Around this time, We received a free on the forward wing. Can't recall the kicker, but we had Ballas jogging into the forward line with his back to the kicker. The kicker kicked it towards Ballas, who never even saw it coming......and an opportunity went begging. Roly killed another assistant. The small fwd setup might have worked but just like the end of the 2nd quarter, North received an avalanche of Frees and kicked 2 goals.

5. For those who think Tabs might be dropped, it is instructive to hear Roly at the 4.40min mark of the presser: Presser
Tabs is ahead of schedule.

6. We were smashed in the free-kick count again. To put in in perspective, if the free-kick count was reversed, then we win (pretty easy actually).

I gather Ross's schedule involves Taberner hitting his stride when the smaller players are dealing with the burden of rising sea levels.

If Taberner is ahead of schedule he'll need to be Benjamin Button if he's to have an impact at AFL level.

Is Micheal Johnson fully fit? He hasn't been his dominant self yet this season. Seems to be getting caught behind more often. There is the fact that opposition teams are no longer bombing it into their forward line under pressure any more and so Jono isn't at the fall of the ball anymore.

We miss Capt Kirk more than I ever imagined. As damaging to us as not snaring a tall over summer.

Think we're REALLY missing AA Luke...

And life without Sandi looks pretty grim too..

Johnno - and by extension Freo - is the biggest loser in AA Luke retiring. Being accountable means he can't roll off to intercept, and he's just not getting to the right spots to rebound. If you think about our back 6, he's the only bloke with the combination of courage, skill and vision to attack the game from halfback with his kicking. In that sense, we really miss Duffman as well.

You'd love to shift Hill back there, but we need him in the middle for now. I'm hoping that in the future we can have Hill and Bennell playing similar link / run / carry roles, but in different parts of the ground (Hill back, Bennell forward). If that happens, we'll need sturdier half-backs who can actually lock down defenders. Spurr is very good at that, but Sutcliffe and Sheridan aren't, and if Hill is the run-and-carry guy, I'm not sure what their roles will be. It would also be helpful if Ibbo could play like 2014 Ibbo.

As for our ruck stocks, Griff is handy, and Hendrix hasn't yet played a season without an injury. If Apeness gets on the park at some point, I expect he'll play a mix of ruckman / forward. But we're putting a lot of eggs in the Apeness basket.

Spurr is a great mark for someone his size. Love how he backs himself to take the grab most of the time instead of automatically punching it. Sutcliffe and Sheridan would be causing Ross sleepless nights (amongst other things). I think Clancee would be a better option than Sutcliffe at the moment.

Johnno is such a dilemma. In a one on one, he wins. In a two on one, he breaks even. But he is slow, so can't go with an opponent who changes direction and accelerates well. In an ideal world, he picks his contests, wins them and sets up an attack. In the current world he has to man up on a good forward, and will struggle to stop them if a good pass comes in. But I guess he's not supposed to do that on his own.
