RR, I thought my point was fairly clear. If you dominate the clearances, contested possession, inside 50's, you can afford to miss goals and still possibly win. The stats show Hawthorn won the stats, including 1 more i50 and the same scoring shots as Freo.

Alternatively, you can lose all those stats and still have the same number of scoring shots (more if you include oobs).

I know many here struggle with Stats, but Hawthorn have not won premierships purely on their ability to kick straight at goals. Last year they had 320 more inside 50's than their opposition (Freo had 131 more than their opposition). Clearly the best in the league and most of those inside50s are coming from the midfield, not their Forwards.

Finally someone talking sense Polly, those fellas had 2 things. A good long kick that hit the target, and a footy brain to identify the target. I do however think that targets with the desire and knowhow to get to the ball even when the kick is not perfect goes a long way as well, and one M Walters seems to be the only forward who is consistently turning average passes from upfield into scoring opportunities. He is doing this by showing a desperation to get to the fall of the ball at all times, and his example should be followed.

Would be interesting to watch the Port and Richmond losses to see if there is a pattern. Both teams, like Freo, have a decent mid setup, but also have forward targets. Just wonder if they are going through similar issues to Freo.

(Not that anyone will care lol, but I think something can be gained checking out similar types of teams to Freo and see if they getting spit open in a similar way).

I think having to offload the ball quicker while under the pump has lead to some stupid turnovers. Wonder if it would be better for the players to take the tackle and wear the free kick (knowing your side at least has some chance of setting up in defence), than offloading directly to an opposition player and getting split open?

Goals, Goals and more goals...
I know it sounds overly simplistic, but... that's our reality, we need goal kickers or at the very least, a method of getting more inside 50's and shots on goal. We don't have anyone up forward that presents as a real threat to other teams. That leads to congestion and turn overs. Simple as that. It's easy to defend against Fremantle because we don't have any significant threats. Defenders at others clubs are on holiday, loving it.

Get some of the young fellas in ASAP. its time.

I'm not so sure that our goal scoring is the problem. As it stands, our points against is the second worst in the league (Brisbane takes top honours there), conceding more than a 100 points in 3 out of 4 games, with the Slime being the only exception...one could argue that had they kicked straight, they would've gone past that 100-point mark, which would make it 4 games in a row, and that is simply, well, terrible. However, I'm not so sure our defense is entirely to be blamed, because (as so many of you here have pointed out) if we keep turning the ball over in the middle of the ground and be caught out on the quick counter, it puts our defense under enormous pressure, one which we have been unable to cope.

Now the answer is seemingly obvious - fix our turnovers, and it will go a long way in helping us turn it around. How do we do that? Buggered if I know...but if this new game plan is helping us find out who has the skill and the decision making ability to reduce our turnovers, whilst sieving out those who just simply isn't up to for the task at hand, I'm happy to put up with some short term pain for some long term gain...

Yeah, point taken there...

I guess I see it in a multitude of ways when asking the question of 'improvement to a point of being competitive again'
Lots has been said about the changing game and for the most part I'd agree, but what is becoming more obvious to me over the last year or so is youth being exposed to the game and talented players learning how to deal with pressure through modern psychology (ie Western Bulldogs etc...). Do I think this is lacking at Freo? Perhaps, but effectively. Ross is a bit of a SNAG but he's also a bit old school too, "bring back the biff". I'm not saying it's all coach and no player, but the staff at Freo have seen the last 3 years up close, maybe too close. I personally think bringing in new coaches needed to be done with new players out there too. A Pearce is a fine example of what's to come. Start playing Grey and Collins etc. Use the 28 year olds as vets with legs. Sandi has been a total legend, but he's getting tired and we need to rely less on our "one offs".

My train of thought went a little derailed. ahhhh...
