so as the other thread has become more of a recruiting thread and less about the "new Game Plan" I thought I'd start a new thread.

I found it interesting in the other thread that some blame for the Game Plan was levelled at the players as they had some input. I wonder how much if any say they have in team selection each week.

It has seemed to my untrained eye that we have gone too short in our back line every week so far this year, against the dogs we had one KKP down back being the ZacD, against the Suns & Slime we had two Zac & MJ, I cannot for the life of me understand this tactic, it seems pointless having smaller running types ready to rebound out of defence if the opposition simply outmark them and get a set shot on goal.

I said after the game against the Dogs that Sutcliff should not be expected to have to match up on players like Stringer yet just two weeks later we are matching him up against Darling, am I the only one who thinks this is just asking him to fail?

I actually didn't mind the idea of going small in the forward line, it worked against the suns and we were able to kick the elusive 100 points, however the bleeding in turnovers caused us to still lose.

whilst i greatly admire young A Pearce's attempt to play the roles given to him week in week out, it seems fairly obvious he is a natural defender and not a forward/ruck.

So for me the changes required are to play Pearce back alongside MJ, and Zac D, let Ibbo roam free generating the drive from half back we are craving.

with the benefit of hindsight its easy say we should have played a genuine ruck alongside Pav in the forward line and i think given the loss of Sandi, Ross will revert to this. so the changes i see for this week are:
Sandi replaced by Griff.
Muz/de boer/suban/Langdon to be replaced by Hannath (playing Forward/Ruck)
AP to go back to help MJ & Zac who face Petrie, Waite and Brown/Goldy.

Like it or not, I think Mayne will continue to get a game until Yarran is fit enough to replace him.

Nah, bring Tabs in for Mayne. Ibbo's "form slump" this year coincides with him having to play 2nd or 3rd tall instead of the sweeper role he is so good at. Get him back to that and a lot of the backline confusion will fade away.

It shouldn't really be about blaming the players for an adjustment to a new game plan (and please, if you want to give me a laugh say you don't believe adjusting to new game plans happens, if so explain to me what happened in 2012 or say Richmond in 2014...or that doing something in training is the same as doing it under the intense pressure of a game). Blaming is pretty useless in situations with any complexity, really just being an emotional vent that rarely gets to decent solutions.

It's not just our less skilled players that are struggling, some of our best are too. See Walters, Hill & Mundy vs Gold Coast and the stuff ups were across the board on Saturday night. Walters and Hill continue to be below par for their own standards in terms of disposal efficiency and decision making (Hill especially). Fyfe had that horrendous turnover that gave WC the lead. When a good percentage of your top players are struggling, it makes it that much harder on the lesser players to lift too. It's not that they can't, just harder.

Freo have shown they can to be a high performing side in terms of making good decisions and having a high disposal efficiency, being #1 in that stat for at least half of last year and #3 at the end of 2015. So we know they have the capacity, it's just allowing for them to click.

I'm with you RM. We need 3 talls in the backline, with Ibbo as your intercept marker. So one of Collins or Pearce has to be the third tall. Because last year, when all 3 were for and available, AA Luke, Johnno and ZD were our backline wall. That's non existent this year. What the hell are coaches doing to not figure that out.

Jezza, Dawson played 3 games in the home and away last year. We pretty much went with 2 key defenders for the majority of the year. A. Pearce came in early when McPharlin missed a couple of games, and then again after MJ was injured in Round 10.

Alex Pearce for his age is well beyond some of the more experienced blokes playing right now. If we were playing half decent football he'd be starring.

I agree it will take a while to click into place.
There were good signs against the egirls, and at times in the 1st and last qtr we made them look slow.
Also, I think everyone is forgetting that Elvis was so good he was worth 2 defenders.
Mayne should be made into a defender like Chris Tarrant IMO. He really is good for bugger all else!
I thought Dawson was outstanding in keeping the reigning Coleman medalist to one goal last week.
And the one he did get was from a shocking kick if I remember correctly so nothing to do with The Fist.

I don't think Mayne is confident or decisive enough to use in the backline. Often his handball or kick misses a target.

Sam Collins is a ready made tall defender, Jonno is Jonno and Dawkson is ...well.....enough said.....and A Pearce is a tall defender/pinch hit ruckman like Roughead.
Ibbo to be the sweeper and Tucker to replace Clancy.
Zu, DeBoor and Suban to be replaced by Blakely Gray and Langdon over time this season.
What this gives us in game plan terms is good marking defenders and run off the half back flank.
Lyon thinks we need to score more ( hence change of structure ) nothing more from the truth when you watch the flooding tactics of Hawthorn - the difference is in execution pure and simple.
