It would be great to have Yeo, but unless yeti’s got some inside knowledge, I’m not sure it’s a given we weren’t interested. West Coast were in the box seat for the following reasons:
I. They had higher picks to offer Brisbane;
ii. Our priority was KPPs, not medium-sized midfielders; and
iii. As a 19 year old, Yeo / his management probably thought he was a better chance of getting games at an up-and-coming team, rather than the team that just made the GF.
West Coast got him for pick 28, which is a steal. I suppose would could have used out first pick - 17 for Apeness – to try to trump West Coast. Given our absence of talls, I’m glad we drafted Apeness and A Pearce, although that depends on whether Apeness becomes a useful player.
McGovern hurts a lot. I’m not an expert spotter of talent, but I must admit, I saw McGovern play a little bit at Claremont and it wasn’t obvious he was an AFL player in waiting, even two years after West Coast drafted him. Kudos to those who saw that coming. Shame it wasn’t Freo.
So, we whiffed on the 2011 rookie draft, but it’s worth noting that in 2010 we got Mickey B and SCOS, and in 2012 we got Spurr and Clancee, so it’s fair to say we have had our share of hits, as well as misses. Again, don’t mention to the new Bond that we expect to steal multiple 150 game players in each rookie draft.
We all know about Darling. We missed there. As for Adams, he's pretty good, but perhaps we should wait until we see Tucker until we make a judgement. But I'm glad people are on the record that taking Tucker ahead of him is a mistake.
