At the moment we look pretty piss weak compared to other teams in the comp. After we get flogged by north this weekend it's going to look even worse. We have the backbones of a good squad which won't take long to reboot but it's got to start now. Fyfe, neale, hill, a Pearce, bennell, moribito III, Weller, Langdon, are all pretty young. Add on a hogan, Mcarthy, Hurley and some youngsters and we are good to go. Play the kids now, write the season off as development (as we are getting no where near the flag this year), and get a good draft pick for a change, or leave the kids in the 2's, play the same 22, give danyl Pearce and anyone else near 30 another 2 years, lose the youngsters via trade and bring in another 2nd rate forward spud as no one wants to come to freo. Top men will decide.

There aren't any? None? Zip?

I would have given some of these a go.

Jackson Thurlow, Mark Blicavs, Josh Walker, James Podsiadly, Zac Smith, Toby Nankervis, Dean Towers, Mike Pyke, Marc Pittonet, James Sicily, Jonathan Ceglar, Angus Litherland

They of course range from just starting out to well established but i think it's worth pointing out that these guys were/are competing for a spot in a side against players such as Franklin, Roughead, Gunston, Schoenmakers, Franklin(again)Tippet, Goodes, Reid, Hawkins, Johnson, Podsiadly.
Any kpp we would have recruited would have been competing for a spot against Pavlich or Mayne.

Is Podsiadily still on a list? He's older than Pavlich.

So, for the record, my question was to remind me of which were the best KPPs drafted by Hawthorn, Geelong and Sydney in the last five years?

Is this really the list you want to adduce as evidence of those teams' superior KPP drafting prowess? Because if that's the best you've got, I'm pretty sure you just demonstrated that Chris Bond and his team has selected better KPP's than those teams in the last 5 years.

Jackson Thurlow - medium defender 190cm, was taken before Freo's first pick in the 2012 draft.
Mark Blicavs - ruckman, had pre-existing relationship with Geelong, signed as rookie pick.
Josh Walker - Geelong rookie draft, 3 games in 5 years, worse than Tabs, already traded
James Podsiadly - 86 years old
Zac Smith - Ruckman, Qld zone selection in 2009, traded already. Did I mention he's a ruckman?
Toby Nankervis - Ruckman, and third stringer at that. Sinclair is getting a game before him, as a ruckman / forward. Callum Sinclair!
Dean Towers - Is the same height as Connor Blakely, and is, according to Sydney's own website, a total spud. Ok, they just call him a fringe player who found games hard to come by. At best, a Chris Mayne replacement. Hard to tell after 2 games this season, but it's possible that he's actually worse than Mayne this season, which is surprising, considering Mayne is playing like he actively trying to lose us games.
Mike Pyke - please.
Marc Pittonet - Ruckman. I'm starting to think you either don't know what a KPP is, or you just REALLY love ruckmen.
James Sicily - 189cm mid-sized forward. Not exactly a KPP, but looks a good mark. In that draft, we took Apeness as a key forward, and A Pearce as a key wherever.
Jonathan Ceglar - Another ruckman, not a good one.
Angus Litherland - a tallish running defender. Was drafted in 2010, which was more than 5 years ago. Better than our picks in that draft. 2010 was a shocker!

Yes Morgan, some of these very simplistic theories of where Freo have gone wrong don't look so simple when you look at the details ... which is why many like proposing simple theories ... without details.
Gone to bigfooty where there's fewer Docker Haters.

Mesmerising really...

Morgan's clinical dismemberment. Look at the grace and precision with which he wields the scalpel. Poetry in motion.

If I could make one suggestion though Morgan. for next time? A ball gag might help silence the squealing. I don't mind blood but squealing sours the coffee.

Ive only got a few minutes now so I'll have to do the necessary research when I get home but I cant allow Morgan's deflections to go unchallenged completely.

I've stated before that he ignores most of the facts to be able to present a contrary view and again nothing has changed. The subject was whether Bond's 'pick the best available' mantra instead of selecting for a balanced team made him a good football manager. I see Morgan has talked about Hawthorn, Geelong etc but neglected to discuss the topic at hand so let get back to looking at Bond's performance instead of taking other teams selections out of their context to the point of almost irrelevancy.

You select on the basis of what you need. Hawthorn & Geelong already had good stocks of talls so a narrow window of talls without that context is pretty much irrelevant,

But back to the real topic at hand, we have a situation where our tall stocks were neglected for quite a while with recent efforts to cover our deficiencies still yet to bear fruit. Talls require longer to develop so neglecting that area for a period of time is a flawed approach.

We have little or no depth of talls forward. Pav is on the verge of retirement. We have Tabs (might develop but showing signs of not being quite good enough), Apeness (injured but I'm still hopeful)...and basically not much else. We might get another tall from trading but Bond's trading record is not one to inspire confidence and his efforts is that area have been a spectacular fail...at best.

We are short of talls in defence. Pearce really looks the goods but he's the only one we are developing. Silvagni might have made it but when you cant get selected, you can't develop. Dawson? he's tall but a spud most of the time.

We should be selecting at least one tall KPP each year, even as a rookie and a long term project. This is the approach that will get us the players we need and a bit of depth even if many of them don't work out as is often the case. Ignoring talls like we did with Darling, Adams, McGovern leaves us where we are now...thin on the ground and looking to trade in players at high prices to address our shortcomings.

I guess when you get caught out promoting Bond's value through other people's achievements, deflecting is all you have to fall back on...and we haven't even discussed the list of players that aren't really AFL standard that we have on our list. Compare Hawthorn's skills standards to our and you'll get an idea of gulf between our recruiting and that of a successful club.

edit: Should have included Johnno in our tall defenders but he is also nearing retirement. The loss of Elvis has hurt us badly so losing Johnno when he retires is really going to hit us. If Pearce replaces Elvis in time) who replaces Johnno?

Yes. I'm convinced now. We've done really well with our recruiting and player development, the game plan is entertaining and well suited to modern football but we're just having a bit of a down period because of confidence.

Now that's been cleared up, let's all go to Spotlight and get some knitting supplies.

We recruited Collins who is a tall, 21 year old kpp backman. I am guessing he was our plan b after we missed out on Adams so it is possible there is some targetted recruiting going on. It is clearly too little too late though.
Even then, Ross's determination to not 'execute' players after the round 2 loss because 'that's not what we're about' meant he wasn't picked despite playing well at Peel, being physically strong and ready, and west coast having a heap of tall forwards that we really, really needed tall players to play on.

Agree on Collins. I'm hopeful we can get some games into him this year to see what he has.

Of course he has to be selected.

Lyon appears often to apply the what was the primary school yr seven Captain approach, now would be yr 6, pick your mates and who buys you a choc milk at recess as compared to picking that year 5 who everyone knows is damn good and would run rings around the lard axse older guys.

Talls down back who are options ready to go now - A Pearce, Silvagni, Collins, Smith(r), Morabito(r) (one more game at peel and put him in)
Small - medium backs who are options ready to go now - Brady Grey (releases Hill back to the wing)
Talls forward who are options ready to go now - Tabs, Hannath, (provide relief for Pav and contest the high ball)
Medium forwards who are options ready to go now - Crozier, Yarran ( can kick goals and have good pace)
Mids who are options ready to go now - Darcy Tucker, Ethan Hughes, (add leg speed and elite skills to the centre)

We have 1 spare spot on our list our list to elevate a rookie - give that to Mora and lets stop pissing about. We have three long term injured players in Balich, Bennell and Sandilands. Elevate Tanner Smith, Mat Ubergang (194cm 91kg forward kpp 20 yrs old possessing elite skills) and elevate either Josh Deluca or Ryan Nyhuis (188cm defender kpp 20 years old great athleticism outstanding in one on one contests)
The line that we have no depth or options is complete BS, what we have a lack of is the willingness to play those depth players for any length of time or at all. Just about all of those players have been on our list for two years or more. For Christs sake give them a go, everyone seems to have written the season off (not me but I'm an optimistic kind of guy) so what do we have to lose?

I noted Rosscos reasons for not playing Brady Gray....apparently he needs to work on his skills??
Well it couldnt be any worse than Barlow, Suban, Mzungu, Mayne etc
Get him in!!
