TOPIC: The New Game Plan Excuse

Corporal Agarn The New Game Plan Excuse 8 years 3 weeks ago #1

I don't get this. Teams and game styles are constantly evolving.
Hawthorn and before them Geelong have or had been up for years and their game plan would have had to be tinkered with during that time.
When a new coach comes on board game style and plans inevitably change and the players either adapt or fall away. WB and Adelaide seem to have adapted very quickly.
So why is this so hard for us particularly when you've had the same coach for awhile? Basically because the players aren't good enough. It doesn't matter how good your game plan is, if you don't have the players to carry it out it ain't going to happen. I'm sure Roos, who was thought of as being a top line coach, came on board at Melbourne with new game plans and ideas, but it's made little difference without top line players being able to carry it out.

I thought the idea of the preseason was the time to learn the new game style. Seems to be a good time for other clubs to do that

With all respect guy's it took those teams three seasons at least to become competitive and also a large turnover of players and staff. We are changing our game and we are expected to do it with almost no changes to the playing group and in a pre season and three games. Seems we are setting an extremely high bar as fans.

Agarn, Q: what do these 5 Freo players have in commmon?

Mundy, Johnson, Pavlich, Sandilands, Fyfe.

A: They are all All Australian.

Here are some 1st round picks who can't get on the park:

Bennell, Morabito, Apeness, Balic.

So exactly how many "top line" players do you expect each team in the AFL to have?

Freo had enough good players to finish top of the ladder in 2015. The rule changes and game style changes don't suit a defensive team in 2016. Lyon has acknowledged it's the players' inability to adapt to this that is the problem, despite trying to change in the preseason.

Yes Davo, but out of those AA's all except Fyfe are aged between 30 and 34 and I wouldn't mind betting that they won't be AA again.

I mean Cloke has been twice AA but that counts for nothing now.

Plus you forgot Ballantyne was an AA player too, but looks nothing like it nowadays.

We might have finished top of the ladder last year but as we know the second half of the season was played by a side that was lucky to win a game let alone be top of the ladder.

Lyon got an awful lot out of a team thin on talent, with a system, and full buy in from the players.

He's got less players that make that work. Elvis marshalling the back line, and Pavlich unable to do the same in the FF line for over 2 years. Now, he's left with a glut of decent midfielders who all rely on the advantage Sandilands gives them. And he's 31 and injured...

Good luck with executing a game plan that requires fast skilled hands and feet, cos we have hardly any blokes with those. When you have Mzungus and various Pearces who can't hit targets even when they're standing right next to them, you going to get what we've got.

This whole change of game plan excuse is an utter crock.

Changing a game plan doesn't make players suddenly incapable of kicking straight, missing targets by hand and foot, failing to tackle correctly and rest of the deficiencies we have seen seen for the last few that have gone unaddressed.

We concentrate on recruiting slow midfielder types to detriment of recruiting players with a range of capabilities needed for a balanced team. Thats Chris Bond. His failings have been obvious for years yet he is somehow a protected species and nobody is allowed to criticise him. He should be sacked tomorrow for poor performance but we all know that won't happen.

Lyon should also wear his obvious failings. He has failed to improve the obvious skill deficiencies and he is incapable of changing that while he continues to select players that fail week in and week out without any sign of improvement.. How does he justify selecting Mayne when every week he kills our momentum. Mayne is a burden we cannot afford to carry and hasn't justified his selection for 2 years. Barlow is getting into the same area. Ditto Suban, Ibbotson, Clarke.

We've held these players in at the expense of others who are now leading their more experienced team mates. Weller, Langdon etc are performing much better than guys who get selected before them. If we are going to lose badly every week, lets lose getting games into guys with a future not hanging on the stale old hacks who refuse to improve where they get it wrong every game. If they can't improve, just move them on and replace them with blokes who can.

It has to start by getting rid of Bond, who has held the club back for years. It has to start by changing the attitude to match the more successful clubs. When our players get singled out at the MRP / Tribunal, embarrass the AFL. Don't meekly fold and say we cop it and move on. Put the morons in a courtroom and force them to justify their inconsistent decisions and force the AFL to stop match fixing by rigging fixtures and umpiring. Put them up in public and hold them accountable. The AFL will fold as they always do when exposed to the light.

But I'm betting we will all sit back and say think of next week. We saw improvement last night. We're still a chance of finals.

Crap. Successful teams don't operate the way Fremantle does

Bond has a tough gig. But I'd still rather see someone else have a go. They couldn't possibly do worse and might actually win a couple.

Nah, teams struggle with change in game plans all the time, in particular if it's a big shift from what they are used to. Lyon is about winning games of footy, he has felt that a game built on defence is the surest way to do that, the second plank for him is building in predictability so that players don't have to think too hard under the pressure of an AFL game and that you count on doing the predictable well enough that it will beat your opposition. This produces great consistency, the problem being that if you want to change it even partially radically you're going hit some serious turbulence. I reckon he's been inching away from it over the past season and a bit, but been forced to make more of a leap this season and we've got some major spluttering happening.

I would be surprised if the players understand the game plan. I read the transcript of every Fremantle post match press conference and apart from brief moments of clarity I find it almost impossible to decipher what Ross Lyon is saying. Which is interesting because if I recall correctly this was pretty much the reason Harvey was sacked.

You think the chaff he feeds to media is what is discussed at training? If either of those two things came together some space time continuum thing would warp.

He doesn't want anyone to understand what he's saying via the media. He's a master of spending 15 minutes saying nothing. Politicians study the man.
