TOPIC: Turnovers and Umpires

I've reviewed the goals kicked in the match. West Coast scored 12 goals. West Coast Goals 1,2,4,7,9 & 11 came about due to Free Kicks. (ie. either the kick for goal or the inside 50 came about due to a free kick).
Goals 3,5,6,8 & 10 came about due to very poor and avoidable Freo turnovers.
That leaves Goal 12 when Kennedy took a good Contested Mark (after throwing Dawson out of the contest) over Ibbo.

Freo kicked 8 goals. From Free kicks were goals 2,5,7 & 8. From turnovers, goal 1. The other 3 Freo goals were from good transition of footy.

The real concerning factor is that the turnovers didn't seem to be brought about by pressure from West Coast. They were generally just poor decisions and disposals by Freo.
It's hard to be too concerned about the umpires because we are all just used to it now and expect nothing less.

two weeks in a row we have been brutally punished on turnovers

not only do we keep making the stupid decisions but we are made to pay for them

I don't want to detract from our woeful execution of skills again as the reason for losing the game, I will watch with interest the Geelong game to see what happens with the free kick differential. Ours grew by a futher 9 last night, with the third qtr being particularly poor.
If the Geelong figure begins to turn the other way I will forever be annoyed that we never took the same approach last year when it could of made a difference.

We can bemoan the free kick differential all we like, but it will only change when we stop giving away stupid free kicks. I sat with an impartial mate last night and he thought by and large most of the frees for both sides were warranted. We do tend to put the blinkers on at times. Granted the umpires make mistakes, but it also cuts both ways. Last night we scored a goal in the last quarter after the ball had been clearly out of bounds along the way. Had this been an Eagles score, DL would have lit up! Also, after Darling took a mark and played on after some initial confusion, an Eagles player ran into an open goal, but the umpire awarded us a 50 metre penalty instead due to the play not stopping - a pedantic call. Again, had that been us on the receiving end, we would have been crying 'robbed'. What really kills us are the amount of critical turnovers at the wrong time. And had they not missed so many easy shots, the score could have easily been 20.12. This potential score discrepancy is NOT all the umpires fault.

At about the 5 minute mark of the third quarter, the Free Kick tally was 11-13 (in Freo's favour).
By 2 minutes in to the last quarter, the Free Kick tally was 24-14 ... that's a period of football where there was 13 Frees to the Slime and 1 to Freo (the third quarter was 12-2).

That's all good FF but like last week with Walters 3 or 4 head high tackles not paid inside forward fifty in the last quarter, many of the eagles 1 handed handpasses were inside the Freo scoring zone. On at least 4 occasions the vision showed that at least 1 umpire was watching and had clear vision of the resulting incorrect disposal. The look on Fyfe's face when he was pinged for his (he assumed legal) one handed pass said it all. I read it as WTF, who changed the rules mid-game???

Sorry FF, it may be very noble of you to try to deflect attention off the umpires, but if you closely watch the replays (as I do, repeatedly in slow motion with zoom when unclear) and scrutinise the umpiring you would see such things as Nic Nait jump under the marking contest with arms flaying and given a free kick (umpire said Ibbo pushed ... he definitely did not). This is just one of many that I could give examples of.

And yes, I definitely noted the Mayne out of bounds play, but that was missed by the boundary umpire, not the dodgy field umpires that I try to bring people's attention to.
And yes, Darling's should have been a 50m because it was a legitimate Free Kick to Sutcliffe, and the Slime ignored the umpires call. That then saw Sutcliffe about to take his kick on the new mark downfield and Darling running within 2m behind him. No additional 50m for encroaching the protected zone ... which was given against Walters earlier in the game when Masten went to kick the ball sideways and was already playing on, and Walters got about 5 behind him ... that resulted in a 50m, followed by a short kick to Darling who goaled.

Finally, that win by the Slime now means that in each of their last 6 derby wins against Freo, they also ended up in front with the Free Kicks. 2005 Round 3 was the last time the Slime beat Freo without winning the Free Kicks.

I notice that Geelong won the free kick count today. Just saying.
Will be interesting to watch.
I have a suspicion that umpires like players watch television.

Spot on DK. I was pretty peeved when ballas got smashed after he missed a goal (by trying to be too fancy). Sure, give him a bit of stick, but he had two guys holding him down and preventing him from setting up the next play.

He also got flung in mid air at some point later in the game. I think that's the difference that you've pointed out before. We just don't seem to got the cheap kicks others do.

We can argue that we don't want them, but against us, most teams are afforded that luxury. 9 extra free kicks is on average about 400m gained.

We were behind the eight ball yesterday from the get go, losing sandi was huge, it would've been nice to get the rub of the green to even it up.

Whilst we're not firing on all cylinders, we'll need a few cheap kicks, some hard work, and the opposition to get shafted a bit to snag a few wins to get something going our way.

Regardless of whether free kicks are there or not, I'd wager that if today's match had been Freo vs Dogs we'd have been penalised for an illegal shepherd on the defender for that last winning goal.

It's not so much the free kick count as much as it is when and where the kicks are given. Always seems like when we are on a run a 50/50 goes against us. The kicks in space on the wing which turn around our midfield and expose the backline. It just always seems to be us that gets those s=&t calls
