TOPIC: Ross' capability to rebuild ?

Who was our recruitment guy when Harvey was coach? If it was not Bond we need to get him back, because we got some good eggs into the team in that period. We also need to be smart about how long we keep guys on our list for. Broughton springs to mind as being moved on at the right time. He played well for us but we moved him on before he became a liability rather than an asset. I fear we may have held on to some players who had good currency in a trade but now have none or very little of that currency left. The Hawks moved on players via trades like Kennedy at the Swans, Savage at St Kilda etc. This trading style of giving something to get something has allowed them to build the list they have.

Bpurpke, think it could be Phil Smart who was in charge of recruiting in that time?

I could be wrong but Brad Lloyd came to us when Harves was coach.

Yeah Q that sounds right, where is he now because he had a great eye for missed talent and could negotiate deals. He and Loyd were a good team. Get him back before next year's draft and trade period. Oh and test our young guys please, I almost ripped my computer out of the wall and threw it away when Ross started banging on about Crozier as a potential replacement. We need to be setting up our key positions, Crozier covers Balantyne or Walters and that is not the answer to our aging list or current injuries.

All this talk of getting McCarthy, Hooker and Hogan is very optimistic. Freo will need some bargaining chips and the best way to get some is to finish low on the ladder and then trade hard. At best freo will get 2 out of 3 with a high draft pick to trade.

Anyhow, I'm jumping on the play the kids bandwagon because freo will get games into the kids, see who will make it and tank all at the same time.

May not need to trade as hard as it may seem. Hooker is a free agent, so all they need is salary cap space. There's a slim slim chance McCarthy could become a delisted free agent if he managed to get a release from his contract. Then there's Hogan, which yeas, would take some skilful and shrewd bargaining even with something decent to offer.

Bond certainly has something to answer for but laying all the blame at his feet is unfair. I am sure there is a selection/recruitment committee that identifies and prioritizes the players we go after. Who knows how their logic works or what they see as needs for the club. I just hope we have not gone back to the bad old days of CEO's and other administrative jokers, getting involved in list tinkering and keeping high profile brand players at the club to sell merchandise.

Hooker has a Victorian girlfriend so has told his agent only to deal with W.A. or Vic clubs.

Apparently we have the biggest offer on the table but he's keen to go to a club with a chance that has a good chance of playing off for a premiership...........so that could put us out of the running.

It's been reported that Hurley isn't training with the other Bombers. That of course doesn't mean anything, but if he was thinking of leaving I hope we don't send Bond to negotiate.

I would imagine that Rosco would have some pride in his achievements and would strive to follow the mantra of achieving the best that one can. He'd accept the challenge of a rebuild if it emerges. He would not walk away from the task without exhausting his coaching repertoire. He isn't a top coach by chance and Pav (who we all trust!) has said that before now.

I don't recall Phil Smart being such a good recruiter for us barring a few good picks. I'd be happy to be corrected.

I was thinking he had a few barren years in the early to mid 2000's, but when I went and had a look, he was hamstrung by the trading circus for blokes like Tarrant and Croad. Otherwise each other year he seemed to pick up one or two cherries.
