TOPIC: Ross' capability to rebuild ?

I'll be the first to admit I didn't pay a lot of attention to Ross Lyon when he was at St Kilda and always been a bit suspicious of his timing in leaving the Saints as they required a rebuild.

Anyone know anything about his ability to build a team from youth ?

I'd categorise Ross as a finisher not a rebuilder but that's not to say that he is incapable. Who knows he may be quite brilliant at it. Pun intended.

Ross is like the Little River Band, who for a period of time whilst very boring were quite successful.

But a Flock of Seagulls came along and it became evident to all that things had changed and there was no going back. Evident to all but LRB who eeked it out for another two decades doin the same thang. They didn't know any other way.

When I see Tendai Mzungu running down the wing I actually hear the lyrics, "hang on help is on its way I'll be there as fast as I can".....in my head.

So Ross is neither a finisher or a builder he belongs to a genre and him having oversight of attacking football is like Glen Shorrock singing Sonic Youth songs.

I can see why Ross wanted a long contract now. He's pretty sure he doesn't have the cattle to do ok for a few years, and wants to be here when we pick up again.

Hypen's argument here is flawed because he's completely disregarded the period when LRB went with the bloke who sang "Sadie the Cleaning Lady" as their lead singer.

Review our early drafts picks (albiet late picks in compromised drafts) for the last 5+ years and tell me who could orchestrate a rebuild with that cattle?

We have picked up serviceable players late but early

- Weller and Connor B

- Apeness and Alex Pearce

- Simpson and Duffy

- Sheridan, Crozier (Palmer compo), Forster

- Pitt and Michie

Not sure who will retire at year end but if could squeeze McCarthy and Hooker in to the cap (am I dreaming) and get Bennell on the park there might be some life in this list.

RL has always jumped ship on the verge of a rebuild or has come in to take over (and gain credit) after a young side has proven themselves incredibly talented. There's been little to no evidence he is capable of a rebuild.

I don't think we need a rebuild though, we have plenty of good players. If we can add Hooker and McCarthy for 2016 along with Bennell back and potentially a high draft pick (possibly used in Hogan negotiations but I don't see any way Melbourne lets him go before his contract is up so I wouldn't bother) we'll be pretty well set for 2017.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

The fact Roly has never needed to rebuild a list as head coach isn't evidence he can't. We just don't know.

The Freo admin would say that we've got a top 5 coach locked in, new facilities around the corner, and continuity is our best chance to draw recruits to a mid-tier club four hours away from the rest of the league.

I say this year is shaping up to be a really exciting year so far.
At the moment it looks like we are down and out. We're knocked to the canvas again for the third time.
Can we recover from here?
I think we can, we just need to unlearn all the poor skill habits that the new hawk coaches have brought us and add some more youth into the side. Mix it up a bit and see if we can find some good players.

Take those rose tinted glasses off Expat. The slide began after the Richmond loss last year and and it has continued into this season, only our performances are probably worse. We have been found out and our season is a write off. However, I agree the only silver lining is we can now truly see how bare or well stocked the cupboard is by giving the young guys a go and seeing who will step up.

This time last year we were 3-0. I thought, hang on a minute, could this be the year. Then, when we were 9-0, I was making plans for the GF. Now where did that get us. For those who have jumped ship, see you later. Yeah it hurts at the minute, but I've been there done that. I'm optimistic. Roly didn't jump ship at the Saints, he wasn't presented with a new contract. Now he'll be here till 2020. So, I have faith in him to turn the ship around and I'm tipping it won't be long.

As he has only coached Saints and Freo, it is harsh to say he has " always jumped ship". He left the Saints for a better club culture I would think rather than a ready made group of young players.

Does no one remember Milne and Nixongate at the Saints?

Lyon left because the place was a seedy basket case from board room to bar brawl. I think it also coincided with him having done his dash with the list they had. It's sounding like Deja vu all over again in that respect.
