TOPIC: Drafting

Interested to see Hawthorn had a third of a team with 35 games or less. They rebuild as they go - why can't we?

Also why did we not draft some decent KPPs yet again - besides Collins? We keep drafting very handy midfielders for Peel - year after year.

Anyone notice that Marcus Adams starred in the Dogs' 57-point win over St Kilda with 24 possessions, five marks (three contested), six rebound 50s and seven one-percenters? He killed us too, but of course Bond and crew didn't think we needed this WA boy.

We wanted him I remember Ross Lyons face when the Bulldogs took him on draft night. Thing is if you rate a player mature age or not that fills a gaping whole on your list take him with your first pick. Darcy Tucker won't play many games this year Marcus Adams would of played every game.

Callum Archee had a good game against us and was only playing in his second game having been drafted last year. Darcy Tucker is highly rated and all agreed on draft night that he was a great get for Freo. As he was drafted at the same time as Callum why aren't we playing him? I am not sure the undersized, skinny, untried etc excuse works as that is what the teams we have played have had a lot of in the last two games. Even if we had drafted Marcus Adams I suspect he would be running around with Sam Collins in the two's at WAFL level. Presumably you draft players to cover retirement, lack of skills or other identified deficiencies in your team. To do that and keep playing those players with the deficiencies without seeing if what you have drafted is better is a bit crazy.

Marcus Adams would be playing for us IMO. He is the hulking defender we need. He has been in the Bulldogs best players for the first 2 weeks. Strong good intercept mark and kicks it 60m off one step. He will go close to an all Ozzie jumper this year if he keeps the form up.

Bozz I totally agree but we did not pick him, at 193cm and 98kg he would have been handy. We do however have a hulking back man from the Box Hill hawks who stands 194cm and when we drafted him weighed 92kg ( I believe he may have put on one or two kg in the pre season). He has the added bonus of being able to swing forward, and where is he being played?

What's your verdict?
Marcus Adams or Zac Dawson (now and for the next 5 years)
I think my view differs from Roly's

We continued to persist with Clancy Pearce and Tommy Sheridan after poor preseasons and poor games against the Doggies. They should be both banished forthwith to Peel and lets give opportunities to Sam Collins (who continues to be a beast for Peel in defence) and Matt De Boer or Brady Grey.

Congratulations Tommy Sheridan, you've escaped the field and are presently fully qualified for goat on the run status, kid class.

You know Sheridan had 27 disposals against the Bulldogs don't you? He was a fair way from our worst.

Agreed bpurple. However I watched Collins highlights when we drafted him and immediately thought this guy is nothing more than a Dawson upgrade. His stats have looked ok in the WAFL but I can't say I've seen him play live. Adams uses the ball great by foot can take a strong Mark and provides the lock down key defender role.

We drafted Collins so be it play him but not in the same team as Zac.

We outsmarted ourselves not picking Adams with our first pick. I still cant believe it.
He will be a star for many years. Up until he went to WP 2 years ago, he was a gun midfielder.
Prior to that he dominated under 18s footy and then went to ammos for a year after his brothers accident where he lost his passion for the game.
I know how much we wanted him and nearly took him last year. We rated him highly but though he would slip.
Memo to Bond & Co, we cant hide anyone anymore.
Adams to the Bulldogs, McCarthy to GWS, McGovern to Adelaide, Paparone, Shaw and many others prior
If we rate them - pick them!!

Bond's position is untenable. He will be moved on at season's end, I have no doubt about that.

What I find amazing is the coach of a team that has consistently drafted mid fielders for four years telling me we lack leg speed.

We are perfectly balanced at the moment, no legs and no height.

interesting that greater western boss campbell is flying to perth shortly to make it a priority to try to lure cam mccarthy back to sydney .. they must rate him cos they have a very decent forward line...with patten, lobb,hoskin-elliott and cameron to return shortly... hope freo have tabs on him...

Another source of annoyance for me besides not taking Adams is that we knew we had key forward line and scoring problems, so once again we drafted midfielders.
Then we put all our eggs in the McCarthy basket and when that falls through we have no plan b.
We then have Bennell fall into our lap who we all agree is going to be a star but he has has injury history. Our 'elite" training programme we put him on sees him last one game.
We also draft Yarran who we are all keen to see knowing that there is no way he'll be ready anytime early in the season due to the injury he copped in the Grand Final.
We also decide to draft Balic who may be good in the future but is of course another midfielder. He has serious injury concerns which is why he is overlooked by other clubs. He doesn't even last out the pre season before he is sent off for an operation on the same wrist that he has injured twice before. This sees him out for the full year.
We also knew Apeness was a long way off returning due to the serious knee injury he received at the start of last year. He will have been out for more than a year before he returns.
Then of course there is the sad tale of Mora.
But we have an ace in the pack. We'll ask a 34 yr old legend of the club who was contemplating retirement to go around one more time, but we won't give him the support in the forward line he needs.

I don't know how those recruiting guys keep their job. Does Roly have any say in what he expects or wants?
