There's been no real crunch at the centre bounces any more where half forwards and half backs and wingmen all converge with the starting mids.

Maybe that's been something of a plan to stop Fyfe from being mauled at clearances, but it hasn't worked.

For those of us caning the game plan of the last four years we can't sook about things now they are undertaking a plan to play attacking football. This is what can happen if you don't get things right.

My theory is they were out on their feet at finals time last year and have backed off this pre season and relatively speaking are under done. Maybe too much.

And Mundy and Fyfes present conditioning is two months away from where it needs to be.

Finally its a really big change to the way they play and they are struggling with it as they did when Lyon first implemented that defensive snot in 2012.

Having a key fwd who makes the distance consistently from 35 metres would also help.

I am on board, its disappointing but that's better than being unwatchable.

I for one prefer the old game plan .....sure it might of been ugly, but more often then not we won. However I get that we need to score more goals to win a flag, this new style sure has exposed poor old Barlow - way too slow terrible kicking skills and poor decisions, he surely needs to go to peel. As for Mayne - can't kick - not really a great contested mark - pretty slow and the one thing he used to do was tackle and give good forward pressure and I have barely seen that lately..... What does he bring to our forward line now ???

I'm in 2 minds. On the one hand, I prefer the defensive style and the contested football it produces ("ugly football", my posterior). I also prefer it when we're winning.

On the other hand, there's no doubt that both precision-pass, possession footy and fast breaking run and spread have been shown to beat the defensive/contested game when the effort is down a little. Plus if the rule changes around the protection zone are going to favour "free-flowing" footy, as everyone opines, then it makes sense to modify the game plan accordingly.

All in all, I'll reconcile myself to the inevitability of unattractive free-flowing footy, so long as we start winning again.

Chris Mayne had a go tonight - 6 tackles and 11 more disposals than Zac D. I thought he played like Roly said this is your last chance. Perhaps he should have gone to the backline and Dawson forward. Ballantyne and Ibbotson seem to be having trouble reading the play. Maybe they haven't read the new game plan.

The first half there were plenty of extra numbers in defence, the Suns were just running rings around them. The second half was more open and free flowing as for maybe the first time we attempted to take the game on and close the gap. It showed with a lot more attractive footy although we still had horrible structures forward and our players clearly didn't know what to do.

I still want to know why Barlow who is elite at two things, getting the ball and doing the in close work, is continually stuck in the forwardline where he can't use those assets and is average at most other areas of the game. When he went into the middle he was the bloke getting the ball out with quick clean hands and we were able to do good things with it.
