The only trouble with putting Lynch types in our forward line Noddy is........we didn't bloody recruit any!
So we'll put our most promising young backman up there instead.

People are going a little overboard with new game plan optimism. We played the same defensive RL plan for all of last week against the Dogs and half of today against the Suns, a few extra blokes running back to help defend and our forwards pushing high up the ground and struggling to get forward and provide a decent option when we do get the ball back. You don't honestly think we went into the Dogs game with just the solitary KPD intending to go man on man in defense did you?!

What changed was us getting killed out of the centre in the second quarter and leaving us a long way behind. Instead of letting the game slip away like normal once behind by 5 goals early in a low scoring struggle, RL actually allowed our players more freedom to attack a bit more and not push as hard into defence. It resulted in some good looking footy but our players didn't have the correct forward structures or decision making drilled into them to move the ball well or position themselves well to receive it.

The second half had plenty of promise that we could be an attractive attacking team (just look at how much Fyfe and Hill benefited after half time let alone our small forwards) but we need practice at doing so and actual coaching on how to do it. I don't believe we've had any of either after watching our NAB games where the freedom to attack was completely absent. I don't know if RL is capable of teaching and coaching our players how to play in this style but we definitely have the cattle for it and I hope he continues to let them build off that second half.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

Things to like in the 3rd quarter, but we don't have the cattle and skills to make it work., They butchered more than they scored, we've seen that plenty of times before. Lyon can open a game up, but he doesn't have the players to make it work. Just look at the ease and precision GCS scored in the 3rd and 4th, vs our efforts...

He knows it, so defence and ugly suffocating footy is his default. But that only works (just )when you're 7-8 goals up, and we coughed up leads like that last year to eek out wins.

That doesn't actually explain how we get 7-8 goals up in the first instance.

I'll try and think up a reason for why I gave that youbeaut to your post when I get your reply.

Check out Lyon's presser after the Suns game. Pretty much admitted what we all now know: lack of leg speed is being exploited by opposition teams when we are defending and when we have the ball we aren't quick enough (or skillful enough at the moment) to do the spread thing that leads to 'fastbreak' type plays. Rule #1 when playing against Freo: get the ball out of congestion as fast as humanly possible, absorb the initial pressure from Freo and then on the third possession make a good decision about getting the ball moving. In the meantime run forward really fast so that we can't catch up; by then they've gotten the ball in the hands of someone flying by who we can't catch up with.

Mayne and Taberner don't fit into the same forward line, so Tabs went out this week. Tabs in for Mayne next week, Barlow has to play in the centre or at Peel for reasons given above. I think a lot of the new game plan relies on what Bennell, Yarran and any 2 or 3 of the young fellas from Peel coming in with some enthusiasm and leg speed.

Quickness of hand and foot witch got players like Haze, Troy Cook, the Carrs and Barlow through games just doesn't seem to cut it at the moment, we need speed over the 10 metres to get a player clear and running. Even Neale who seemed to have it last year has not been breaking into space once he gets the ball. This is either overthinking the game plan or overworked /underfit.

The overriding thing I have taken from the last two weeks is how slow we are. Which is a concern because quite a few of our best players are slow.

Chewy, the 7-8 goal thing is a reference to early last year. We iced games early, then went into classic Rolyball mode; defend the lead and stifle the opposition. We coughed up a fair number of big leads doing that. after R8 we might as well have been a different team, the contrast was stark.

They can't sustain the run of Rolyball against skilled sides who are also quick. Lyon pretty much said so. Not only do we not have speed, what skills we do have, drop off considerably with fatigue. Don't take my opinion for it. Watch Freo play. it should be obvious. Lyon has covered for lack of KKP talent by deploying his 'blue collar' game, where sheer effort has seen them squeeze out wins. It takes its toll as we saw in finals last year

GCS made the longest road trip and still had legs and skill to score at will in the last quarter. With our key players over 30 and reduced interchanges we are going to struggle.

People advocating ins and outs and strategy as solutions, don't seem to be watching the game...

Reduced interchanges have nothing to do with it. If anything they should benefit more seasoned players who have greater endurance. People are doing what people do in taking what's in front of their eyes and using it to confirm what theories they already have in their heads.

When your you have uncertainty you make bad decisions, feel pressure more and are more likely to stuff up the execution of skills. The more this happens, the slower you look. We could use more pace and some of the rule changes and enforcement of ball movement by the umpires (e.g. quicker calls of play on after a mark) exacerbate this a bit, but it's not the primary reason for the drastic drop off this year from last.

A lot of our seasoned players may have endurance, but don't have the skills. Muz, D/C Pearce, Mayne, Sutcliffe, Spack, Griffin, Clarke. We need both. We lack it.

Perhaps, but for all of the first half of last year Freo were the #1 side for disposal efficiency so we know they can do it well enough.

(I think a few of those players you may also be mixing up poor composure/decision making with skills...both Danyle and Clancee and even Clarke, also Griffin's ain't too bad for a big man if confident)

Drubbing, its not an accurate generalization to say we won all of our games last year putting up a big lead and letting it whittle away in the 2nd half, running out of petrol .

Round 1 over Port we were behind most of the game and eventually got them in the last quarter.

Round 2 against Geelong, we won increasing our lead as the game went on.

Round 4 against Sydney, we got a big lead, they eroded it back to even during the 3rd and beginning of the 4th quarter, and we had more run at the end of the 4th to win the game.

Round 5 against Melbourne we won increasing out lead as the game went on

Rounds 8 we just flogged North Melbourne from start to finish.

Round 9 against Adelaide we fought it out and got over them in the last quarter.

I'd suggest we'd be a fair bit quicker if we had Mora and Simpson out on the park.

Don't understand all the angst. We kicked 100 points so the "new" game plan is working. Be happy.

PS Way too much analysis in this thread. The game isn't a science. We simply don't have enough players playing to the required standard.
