This article is from Paul Chapman from today's Herald Sun:

CONGRATULATIONS to the AFL for rule changes that have opened up our game, even if they just made Fremantle’s chances of winning this year’s flag a whole lot harder.

In fact, I don’t think the Dockers can win it.

A lot to like in that. Puts the challenge to Ross.

"The direction footy is heading doesn’t suit the Dockers" — the opinion so challenging he felt he had to say it twice.

He makes some very good points. Especially Freo running of out steam late in previous season because of a relentless and taxing game plan. And that was with extra interchanges.

How does a more open game, with less smashing of bodies at stoppages translate to a bigger toll on players bodies and shorter careers? If the ball is used more skilfully as Chapstick maintains is going to happen, that means less hard running back and forward not more. The hard part of the game will be trying to get a quick drink of water while jogging back to the middle after a goal instead of the 100 mt sprint to the bench and being harassed by the bench staff who want to look busy while the cameras are on them.

I think he sells Freo short if he thinks we don't have the skilful players to take advantage of a more open game style. They are here, they just aren't being used in that way at the moment.

Right or wrong, Chapman can't write. What a goddam awful article to read.

I reckon after one game into the season it might be premature to deem Freo a lost cause. How well did the flag favourites, Hawthorn go and are they doomed? Besides I want to see the Dockers begin steadily and build towards the finals.

Hawthorn started slow and came back strong. They looked like a top 4 side. Freo also looked like a side that befits its position on the ladder. Therein is the difference.

I think it a quaint idea that footballers write their own articles. Chappers has probably done a transcribed interview with the Sun intern, and the sub has just not done on any work on it.

Freo may be a different side today, and that also is a concern - that they see saw between good and bad all season.

I really think Lyon is rolling the dice for the last time with a list that is reliant on old KPPs, and will definitely be without Pav next year, but maybe MJ, 211 and the red headed love child as well. Huge gaps. The new contract allows him to enter the coaching buffer zone of rebuild, and then he's got 3 years to meet readjusted expectations, from where he'll be in the box seat to renegotiate or move on, if he wants.

Coaches have to plan for themselves as well.

I think most people are missing the important point here.

Geelong are obsessed with Freo over the last few years. Thats not entirely unexpected considering how many times we've ended their finals campaigns, including knocking them off in Geelongistan.

We've got inside their heads, and Chaptstick can't hide that part.

Reread that article with that point in mind, then he sounds pathetic.
