TOPIC: It's gonna get worse before it gets better

Yeah, there you go - dump Noddy and get Doddy.

If my name was Steve and I had a big cheque book, I would be spending on a vision.

Isn't the vision 40,000 housing lots in Cockburn?

Freo went on the rampage right up til Richmond last year. As polly says, lead by Fyfe who smashed through everyone and took the team with him. I thought Roly had grown a pair with hair, and found the flick switch between defence and kill, maim, disfigure.

Then it stopped dead. And it's been lifelessly throbbing, and squeezing out 4 points since.

What I can't understand is we go from so good, to so boring and more often, so bad, so quick. Fyfe went off the boil well before getting Mitcelled, and he hasn't raised anyone's temperature since.

Clearly a discussion was had and it was agreed we currently haven't got the team to have sustained success, but the Board must have agreed we've got the right coach, and a 5 year contract was signed to have Lyon rebuild and have a crack at the big prize. Post McPharlin and Pav's best years we are seriously short of quality Kpp, excluding Moose who appears to have what's required.

The last half of 2015 was filled with doubt about our cred, for good reason, we weren't impressive. Rd 1 was a demonstration of the improvement that the Bulllies had compared to us from 2015.

Enjoy the rebuild and the young guys coming through

The win/loss ratio since the Richmond game is probably a fair indicator of where we're at, not the McClelland trophy.

I don’t reckon it was as simple as Fyfe carrying the team in an Atlasean feat, be damned to all else.

It was more like they developed on over-reliance on Fyfe as he became a sure fire method to succeed. It’s pretty understandable as to why that reliance develops. But it created a twin problem, where opposition figured stop Fyfe, stop Freo and it was worth putting as a lot of resources into doing that. The team then struggled to come to terms with losing that edge and didn’t step up enough to force the opposition to put their attention elsewhere.

The second thing was that Pav stopped being as productive (ergo less space for the second KPF’s like Taberner), so the goals dried up. This really demonstrates how good we could be if we have a key forward who can kick 4+ goals on a regular basis and then to have the spread of goalkickers on top of that.

To me the ideal scenario, for this season at least, has a couple of key elements. First is to have Bennell, Weller (fulfilling his current potential) and Touchwood (or maybe one of the young guns if they can bring it) in the side. This would give us a unbelievable increase in skill, pace and hug attacking power, as well as freeing up Hill & Fyfe from being the main avenues for this.

The second key element is not as readily available, but to have a medium to tall forward or two step up and kick that 4+ goals on a regular basis. Last year showed that can be done, it’s just having someone in form to do it. Pav may do it, but the time has past for Freo for him to carry that on his shoulders.

The first half of last year showed there is definitely the capacity to score and dominate under the current structures.

Yes, everyone knows we need to kick more goals but I think everyone also realises that we don't have the capacity to do so, at least until we get more options down there.
I hadn't thought of your reasoning of our falling away last year would be partially down to stopping Fyfe, ROTV, but you're probably onto something. It also shows that our midfield is maybe not as great as we think. Mundy is a clearance machine and Neale is proving very reliable, but as we all know, you need a lot more than that, and I'm not sure our midfield is as good as we think it is.
That's another reason why we can't afford to play Fyfe as CHF. spells in the forward line for sure, but you can't take the best midfielder in the league and decide to play him permanently in the forward line. Dangerfield is a similar player and I can't imagine Geelong playing him as a permanent forward.

Agarn I was trying for a variant on the needing more goals palaver, and instead the value of one player, a key forward, doing it within the Freo system last year.

And as for the Fyfe reliance, I'm trying to say that his dominance warped the way the midfield functioned, so that when he was nullified a bit, that warping didn't correct itself. So that's something to work on as a team (a bit like the Hawks did with Franklin over a season in 2013). Playing forward could be part of the answer, while that may mean a fair level of short term pain, try doing it in a way that minimises it and maximises long term gain.
