When you are picking in the late first round, or early second round, the chances of nabbing a superstar are slim. We fluked one with Nat Fyfe. For the rest, if you can get 150 serviceable games out of a player picked at that spot, you'd call that a win.
To me, Weller looks like a Sheridan / Sutcliffe type. Won't set the house on fire or substantially increase Freo's chances of winning a premiership, but can play a role. I doubt that he would contribute as much as more seasoned role players like Muz, Clancee, de Boer and Suban. Still, those guys have been a bit average lately, so maybe you invest the time in Weller. But I don't think backing in the older guys is as big a sin as everyone (other than DK) seems to think.
Remember Viv Michie? Killed it at Peel. Next great inside ball winner everyone said. Everyone except the coaching staff, who didn't pick him. So he went to Melbourne, and has barely made a dent. Is it possible that out 86 assistant coaches actually have a grasp of talent that will succeed at a high level?
