I'll say it again, I think Weller will likely be a good if not great player for Freo.
But I have an issue with young players who are not strong in contested football. Neale and Fyfe were very strong in contested football right from the start of their careers. Hill was an outside run and carry player ... but you can not afford to have too many of those type of players in your team and Freo has Hill and D.Pearce ... both far better than the current Weller.

Hiding Weller in a forward pocket as a small forward, when we already have Ballas and Walters as small forwards is not smart in my eyes. I want to see the contested football that made Freo look so good in 2013. Fans wanting to see flair and more goals kicked are going to need to realise that this is at the cost of our more physical defensive players like de Boer not playing and hence Freo getting more goals kicked against and more likely to lose matches, IMO.

Again, Weller got 5 disposals and I personally don't like young players being carried by the team under the auspice of developing talent. I see no reason why they can't develop and prove themselves in the Magoos.
Lastly, I have not said Weller should be dropped, only I can understand why he could be, yet even that somehow seems to be taboo with many here blinded by his hair or potential or something ... remember de Boer also has good hair.

ROTV, in response to my post regarding Weller having only 5 disposals, you said "disposals isn't the only measure" ... "Otherwise Stephen Hill wouldn't be one of the first picked every week".
Why would I be so wrong to assume you just made a point that you think Stephen Hill has low disposals ... are we really now arguing semantics and technicalities.

I like De Pig, and he does have a good head of hair, but you know if you had a player running with ball in hand looking at the 50m arc and big sticks approaching, I'd rather it was Weller. The one thing old Pig is not so good at is kicking the old bit of leather further than about 40m.

DockerKnockers that's how interpretation goes I spose, but I thought the bit saying disposals aren't the only measure might've been a reasonable clue (edit: and the bit about "one of the first picked" I.e in front of higher possession getters in Neale, Barlow and up until being Capt, Mundy).

But despite the weekend's occurrences, Freo has no shortage of contested possession players. What they definitely could use more of, especially given the way the game is going, is speed and skill. Developing that is rightfully a priority for the footy department, so I would see playing him on a forward flank as a development rather than "hiding ".

When you are picking in the late first round, or early second round, the chances of nabbing a superstar are slim. We fluked one with Nat Fyfe. For the rest, if you can get 150 serviceable games out of a player picked at that spot, you'd call that a win.

To me, Weller looks like a Sheridan / Sutcliffe type. Won't set the house on fire or substantially increase Freo's chances of winning a premiership, but can play a role. I doubt that he would contribute as much as more seasoned role players like Muz, Clancee, de Boer and Suban. Still, those guys have been a bit average lately, so maybe you invest the time in Weller. But I don't think backing in the older guys is as big a sin as everyone (other than DK) seems to think.

Remember Viv Michie? Killed it at Peel. Next great inside ball winner everyone said. Everyone except the coaching staff, who didn't pick him. So he went to Melbourne, and has barely made a dent. Is it possible that out 86 assistant coaches actually have a grasp of talent that will succeed at a high level?

Most teams need to at some point in time introduce new talent that, could in the future have more upside than the serviceable player that they replace.
My sense is Weller has been identified as a player that has more upside and a touch more class than some of our other good citizens. If this is the case then if we are to play a strong part in finals this year I would like Weller to have the time in the ones. If we are not good enough to be able to introduce 1 player of talent into our line up and beat Gold Coast at home, then I fear we could be in trouble.

Morgan who are the superstars of our team and where were they picked?
Pav? Hill? Sandilands, Walters, Fyfe, Mundy? Neale perhaps? Johnson?

I'm not sure drafting position says all that much about how far a bloke can go.

Morgan, I agree with much of what you say, but I'd be disappointed if Weller was just a Sutcliffe/Sheridan type. While he's got a fair way to go yet, he looks stronger, quicker and more skilled at this stage of his career than either Sutcliffe or Sheridan, and he looks like he can make a difference. Sutcliffe and Sheridan have limited impact on the game and are just average defenders by AFL standards. We are badly missing the influence of Paul Duffield (at his best).

Weller is bit stronger over the ball than Sutcliffe and Sheridan.. Will be a animal when he bulks up and has a bit of class around goals.. When he hits 50 games he will be gold

My thing is, winning contested possessions is the key to winning games. This is why Fyfe is rated so highly.
Since 2013, Fremantle have won 52 games (of their 73 games), 43 of those we won the contested possession count (about 83%).
Since 2013, Fremantle have only lost 6 times (and drawn once) when they have won the contested possession count. In each of those losses, they won the contested possession by only small amounts, but lost the uncontested possession.

Invariably the contested possession wins, generally also have wins in the clearances and inside 50s. With more inside 50s your team kicks more goals ... see where I'm going with this. Hawthorn are the exception, due to their supreme skills they are able to lose the contested possession counts, but still dominate the uncontested possessions to win games.

This is why 211 is so important to Fremantle. He gives us a huge advantage in winning the contested football in the ruck. This is also why I am so critical on Freo's young players who are not strong in contested stats ... eg Sutcliffe, meanwhile I have loved Neale and Fyfe from early in their careers.

I am not sure, but would suspect that Brad Hill, Isaac Smith and Luke Breust would not have massive contested possession counts and they contribute quite well at Hawthorn. Would hope that we are looking at Weller in this frame, to add the finishing touches. Poor finishing has been our undoing recently. Whilst you haven't been able to criticise our endeavour, we have made it look hard and come up short against the best teams when they are playing well.

Luke Breust is actually quite high in Contested Possession (as is Cyril Rioli).
Bradley Hill is at the lower end of the Contested Possession, but high in Uncontested (doesn't surprise me).
Issac Smith is also fairly low.

But Hawthorn have elite skills across the board. They can use the uncontested possession to great effect with little turnovers. In 2015 they were ranked 13th for Contested Possession averages per game, but a clear 1st for uncontested, total disposals, disposal efficiency and inside 50s. Yes it would be lovely to copy Hawthorn, but Freo just don't have the skills to do that. If you are going to try to copy Hawthorn, and select elite skilled fast paced players, then they need to still get high possessions (that is, Weller needs to do better than 5 disposals).
