It's this sort of blinkered thinking that has the team where it is now. In spite of all their success in recent years Geelong has continually evolved while the Dockers are still playing their 2013 GF team - and look at the difference on the weekend.

Play the young blokes now !

Last year we play the Dogs at Etihad in round 7.
It was a fantastics game, we smashed them early with the Blitz and the Bulldogs put in a great 2nd half and nearly snatched it at the end.
We were in the middle of our best football ever........yet we were lucky to win.

5 things from that match stood out:

1. Aaron Sandilands obliterated Ayce Cordy in the ruck. Minson was in the 2s; Cordy managed three hit-outs to Sandilands' 50

2. Michael Johnson was critical with a lazy 29 disposals. BOG.

3. Clancy Pearce had a great game with 25 touches and a goal.

4. Fyfe had a lazy 30 possies , 3 goals, 7 Marks, 5 Frees AGAINST, 1 report for tripping.

5. Mayne had 17 touches, 1 Goal and 10 great tackles. That day it was noticeable that we actually hurt them in the tackles, they were just too small.

Bulldogs are good and getting better, they butchered the match in the finals against the Crows.
However, come September, we will be better.
Gold Coast might bring it, but come Saturday, I suspect the Suns are going to get hurt.

There hasnt been much difference in the hawthorn team that has made 4 grand finals straight. maybe 2 or 3 different players each year?

Now that they have 5-6 missing from last year, we will see what their depth of young players is like.

RE: Geelong's current success, it's very easy to take a "Grass is greener on the other side of the fence" attitude.
In actual fact, Geelong had 7 new Geelong players in their side (compared to their 2013 5 point Prelim loss to Hawks).
They are;
- Dangerfield (ex AD) - certainly one of the best 5 players in the comp, arguably currently the best.
- Lang (draft '13) - A quality 2013 1st round draft kicked 3 goals.
- Smith (ex GCS) and Stanley (ex SK), two ok ruckmen, nothing special IMO.
- Henderson (ex CA), Gregson (draft '14) & Kolodjashnij (draft '13) didn't contribute much to their Round 1 win vs the Hawks.

Geelong/s average age for Round 1 2016 is only 141days younger than their 2013 PF loss team, and not even 1 yr less than Freo's Round 1 team.

My point is, Dangerfield aside, because he wanted to move back to Geelong due to family reasons, (eg. Bennell & McCarthy), Lang is probably their only real quality draft (end of 2013) that had a big impact in Round 1.
The players they have cut loose since 2013 are mostly 30yrs old +, eg. Hunt, Johnson, Podsiadly, Rivers, Stokes, Corey. Which 30yrs+ player from Round 1 should Freo cut to make the team better out of Pavlich, Dawson, Griffen, Mundy & Mzungu?
Gone to bigfooty where there's fewer Docker Haters.

You can add D Pearce to that list of blokes who are or will be 30 this year. But I don't see 30 as some magical age where players cant play anymore. If they are fit can still contribute and have the drive and passion to play then play them. You asked for a list of 30yr+ players that could be dropped this week, Mazungu and D Pearce. But they are not on their lonesome, I would seriously look at giving these guys a run in the Peel team as well - Barlow, Balantyne and Mayne. They have collectively stunk it up for a number of games now, Barlow is probably the only one I would consider playing this week but the other guys have had more than a fair go. Mazungu is unique in that group in that he gives 110% but has lost his blistering pace and turns the ball over too much. Maybe he could play forward he is a good mark and can kick goals, but at 29 and showing signs of slowing down is he a long term answer?

Remember when Mayne couldn't miss a shot on goal? I do. I just wish it would come back again.

That was when he parked himself in the forward line, before he spent his time running around the ground.

Accuracy goes down as fatigue goes up. Players around the ball creates clearances and turnovers but requires leg work. It's a trade-off.
